The Subject Commission for General Studies at the Centre for Teacher Training – Didactic Centre was established to provide advice, organise and coordinate the subject of General Studies/interdisciplinary general education across the relevant subjects in the dual-subject Bachelor's degree programmes leading to a Master of Education in Primary and Lower Secondary School Teaching (with a focus on primary school) and Special Education.

The Subject Committee is elected by the Teaching Council (RaLe) and constituted by the DiZ Deputy Director for Teaching once at least half of the teaching staff and half of the students have been nominated. The Council for Teaching (RaLe) assumes responsibility (see RaLe resolution of 11 September 2019).

Role/function

The Subject-Specific Commission for General Studies advises the participating bodies (School I, Institute of Educational Sciences, Didactic Centre, institutes of the relevant subjects) and prepares their resolutions. The bodies may delegate specific tasks to the Subject-Specific Commission for General Studies for independent decision-making and execution.

The Subject Committee elects a chairperson, who represents the Subject Committee both internally and externally.

The term of office for the General Studies Committee is two years; that of student members is one year. The General Studies Committee and its members continue to carry out their duties after their term of office has expired until new elections are held.

Composition

The General Studies Subject Committee comprises:

• 3 lecturers from the core area of General Studies at the Institute of Educational Sciences
  (to be nominated by the Chair),
• one lecturer each from the relevant subjects of Biology, Chemistry, History, Computing Science, Economics Education, Philosophy, Physics, Politics/Sociology and Technology
  (to be nominated by the respective institutes),
• one lecturer each for Primary Education and Special Educational Needs
  (to be nominated by the relevant Institutes),
• 4 students from the participating degree programmes (BA and M.Ed. in General and Secondary Education and Special Education)
  (to be nominated by the General Studies student body in consultation with the other teacher-training student bodies and the student representatives on the Faculty Council of Faculty I).
