Around 100 years ago, the Botanical Garden in Oldenburg endeavoured to showcase as many native plant and animal species as possible.

Parts of this concept as a biological (botanical and zoological) garden have survived to this day.

In fact, among the Botanical Gardens in Germany, the Botanical Garden Oldenburg has by far the most animal species. These include great owls, parakeets, poison dart frogs, ferrets, snakes, tortoises and free-roaming peacocks and storks.
