Aeshna viridis
Green mosaic damselfly (Aeshna viridis)
In northern and central Europe, the green mosaic damselfly (FFH Appendix IV; RL D: 1; RL Nds.: 1) is bound to waters with the occurrence of crayfish claw(Stratiotes aloides, RL D: 3, Nds.: 3). Egg laying takes place exclusively in this rare plant species. The species colonises watercourses with low currents and still waters, provided that dense crayfish claw populations are present. Overall, only a few basic studies on the biology and ecology of the species are available. Little is known about the exact habitat requirements that go beyond its close association with crayfish claw, as well as its mobility and dispersal behaviour. In Germany, the green mosaic damselfly is restricted to the northern German lowlands. In Lower Saxony, the species is mainly found in the Aller and Elbe river valleys, the Weser lowlands around Bremen and the Ems lowlands near Leer.
