Stream Cars - Data stream management and sensor fusion in intelligent/cooperative vehicle applications

Future vehicles will have more and more sources of information at their disposal. In addition to the internal vehicle sensors already available today, wireless communication with other vehicles and the traffic infrastructure (e.g. traffic lights) will be added in the near future. The components provide information about the surroundings and the traffic situation, the condition of the vehicle itself and the situation of the people in the vehicle. By utilising this information through the vehicle, mobility should become safer, simpler, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.

The continuous derivation of such information from raw sensor and communication data is a difficult problem, which is to be solved by methods of sensor fusion and sensor data enrichment. In this project group, such methods are to be integrated into a data stream management system (Odysseus) and develop a prototype vehicle application. In co-operation with the Institute of Transportation Systems Technology of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR/TS) in Braunschweig, the system can be implemented on a development platform (DOMINION) for intelligent and co-operative vehicle applications in a real environment (see illustration).

The project group topic is suitable for all students, especially those specialising in IS/SE. Subsequently, there are opportunities for further student work in the areas of vehicle applications (also in co-operation with Braunschweig) and data stream management (IS/DBIT departments at the University of Oldenburg).
