Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, a small town of around 10,000 inhabitants, is located near Detroit with its approximately 680,000 inhabitants. Today, Detroit is the third largest metropolitan area in the foothills of the Great Lakes and the economic, political and cultural centre of the Detroit metropolitan region.

The university itself has around 20,000 students. Oakland University has a particularly good reputation in biology and psychology, neuroscience, engineering, economics and the humanities. It is also very popular due to its large green campus. In addition to numerous sports fields and hiking trails, it even has its own golf course. The university's cultural programme is also impressive: Events associated with the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance take place regularly.
