Professional learning communities see themselves as self-organising teams that manage with a minimum of external control and in which educators work together and learn from each other in a professional manner.

Professional learning communities are motivating because teachers and leaders do not work in isolation, advise each other, strive for fault tolerance and create a culture of help. In PLGs, the key values are a culture of help and tolerance of mistakes and the attitude that mistakes should not be seen as a mishap to be tabooed but as an opportunity to learn. In PLGs, teachers talk to each other about their teaching, its advantages and problems. Together they develop shared convictions, values and standards that are accepted as pedagogical behaviour in the school. Among other things, this has a positive effect on job satisfaction and health - and leads to better quality in teaching.
