In professional learning communities and networks, teachers collaborate professionally with minimal external guidance, learn from one another and pursue the shared goal of continuously improving their teaching practice. Here, teachers discuss their lessons with one another, including their strengths and challenges. Together, they develop shared beliefs, values and standards that are accepted as standard pedagogical practice within the school. In professional learning communities and networks, a culture of support and tolerance of mistakes are key values, as is the attitude of viewing mistakes not as a taboo mishap, but as an opportunity for learning.

Professional learning communities and networks are motivating because teachers and school leaders do not work in isolation, but advise one another. The aim is to foster tolerance of mistakes, and a culture of mutual support develops. Among other things, this has a positive impact on job satisfaction and well-being – and leads to higher quality teaching.
