Beyond the classroom. Ethnographic studies on the margins of school (JenUs)
The aim of this DFG project (2017-2020), which is part of a co-operation with the University of Hildesheim (Prof. Dr Gunther Graßhoff), is the ethnographic description and reconstructive analysis of the formation of pedagogical order in extracurricular activities at all-day schools. Extra-curricular clubs are an integral part of the structure of all-day school programmes. These programmes usually offer sports, craft, social, artistic, musical and, in a broader sense, cultural content. As a rule, they are not organised by teachers, but by other educational staff, often non-teaching staff who have no formal qualifications for educational work.
The project focuses on the extent to which constitutive organising principles emerge between school lessons and socio-pedagogical logics of action in relation to pedagogical practices, dealing with the subject matter and the participation of children and young people. The reconstructions are based on the theoretical heuristics of learning culture analysis (Idel & Rabenstein 2018). Non-instructional programmes were observed at four secondary schools in the Federal States of Bremen and Lower Saxony.
