Explore and Network at the World CUR 2019

The social program gives you the chance to network and get to know your peers and colleagues while discovering the culture and history of Northwest Germany and the Netherlands.

Social Program Overview

Wednesday, 22 May: The "before" congress social program is about "Old Cities in Northwest Germany or the Netherlands".

  • day excursion
  • explicit booking during registration process necessary (20 €; free for Travel Support Program attendees)
  • 3 different tours available (see below)
  • all tours will include a packed lunch

Friday, 24 May: The "within" congress social program gives you the chance to explore Oldenburg together in one of several guided tours.

  • afternoon excursion
  • open to all World CUR 2019 attendees
  • no registration necessary 

Sunday, 26 May: The "after" congress social program is about "Harbors, Islands and Nature in Northwest Germany".

  • day excursion
  • explicit booking during registration process necessary (20 €)
  • 2 different tours available (see below)
  • all tours will include a packed lunch

Make your tour choice

Before registering and booking your social program you should inform yourself about the different tours. Please note your first-best and second-best choices for each of the two days in advance and select these tours during the registration process accordingly.

The "tour details, assignments and tips" list all registered PINs for the respective tour and provide a tour schedule and leaflet.

“Old Cities in Northwest Germany or the Netherlands”

22 May - Tour Option 1: Groningen (BFR-1)

Visit the University City of Groningen in the Netherlands

Use the chance to cross the borders to the Netherlands to visit Groningen*. Through guided tours we want to explore the long and turbulent history and one of the most beautiful city centers in the Netherlands. Join us and explore the modern innovative architecture and culture of Groningen!

22 May - Tour Option 2: Bremen (BFR-2)

Visit the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen

Experience an unforgettable day in one of the most famous and historical cities in Northern Germany: Bremen. Well-known fairy tales (e.g., Town Musicians of Bremen), an award-winning science museum (Universum Bremen), and a renowned art gallery (Kunsthalle) are waiting for you besides many more exciting attractions!

22 May - Tour Option 3: Farm and Shipyard (BFR-3)

Made in Germany: Visit a modern farm and a major shipyard

What does a German farm look like? What kinds of products are produced there and how? Experience it for yourself at the Diers-Hof (website in German only) near Oldenburg. Afterwards, we will visit the Meyer Werft, a famous shipyard founded in 1795, where five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world have been built.

“Harbors, Islands and Nature in Northwest Germany”

26 May - Tour Option 1: Bremerhaven (AFT-1)

Visit the seaport Bremerhaven and go on a mudflat hiking tour

Have you ever experienced different global climates and environments in one place? Bremerhaven is a city of ambitious interactive museums: It is home to the German Emigration Center (Auswandererhaus) and the Klimahaus, a famous science museum about climate.

In addition, we will go on a guided mudflat hiking tour* in one of the most vibrant ecosystems on earth: the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

  • Expected departure near the venue: Sun, 26 May, 9.30h
  • Expected time of return: Sun, 26 May, 18.30h

* It is possible to participate in the social program but to abstain from the mudflat hiking tour in particular.

26 May - Tour Option 2: East Frisian Island (AFT-2)

Visit an East Frisian Island and go on a mudflat hiking tour

Hop on a boat and experience a day at one of the most beautiful islands located at the North Sea with white dunes, precious vegetation, bird sanctuaries and old houses. Our destination will be the East Frisian Island of Spiekeroog.

In addition, we will go on a guided mudflat hiking tour* in one of the most vibrant ecosystems on earth: the Wadden Sea World Heritage.

  • Expected time of return: Sun, 26 May, 20.30h
