What is Students at Work|Campus Office?
Students at Work/Campus Office - Who we are!
We are two student employees who work for Students at Work|Campus Office with the support of the Office for University and Trade Union Co-operation, the DGB member unions ver.di, IG Metall, IG BCE and GEW and the DGB Youth. Students at Work|Campus Office (formerly HIB University Information Office) was set up to open up trade unions more to students.
After all, students are also employees: in their future job, when working alongside their studies, in internships. Almost three quarters of students have to work alongside their studies. Whether as assistants at university, as freelancers in adult education, as short-term or permanent part-time employees - students have long been a cheap and flexible source of labour for local labour markets. Trade unions are fighting to improve working and living conditions, including those of students.
Because entry into working life today is often via internships , there is also a great risk that students and young graduates will be exploited. Practical experience during studies is good and important. However, it should provide further qualifications, professional support and appropriate pay. However, the reality is different: unpaid and long internships are widespread. Here too, trade unions can support students and strengthen their interests.
Furthermore, we see trade unions as an emancipatory force in society and want to contribute to criticising existing conditions through lectures and workshops at the university and university of applied sciences. Because the university is a place of education and training, students have to deal with the quality of research, teaching and supervision. Standing up for a good education at universities does not (or at least not only) mean trying to improve individual opportunities on the labour market. It also means asking questions such as: Can academic study really be reduced to labour market-oriented specialist training? What skills and content are taught, how and why? How do students want to work, learn and live?
