You have finished your PhD or first Postdoc and want to stay in science heading for a career in academia?
Quantumbiology, sensory biology, biochemistry, magnetoreception neuroscience or behavioural biology is your interest and expertise? Than you would be the perfect fit for our team.
You would work with world leading experts in their field, who regularly publish their findings in the very best scientific journals (including e.g. 7 papers in Nature since 2009). We would support you to develop and establish your own research profile. This process is supported through our strong international network, flat local hierarchies, unique and cutting edge equipment as well as support within the University for grant applications and career development.
Working in the ERC Grant QuantumBirds (www.quantumbirds.eu) brings together behavioral biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, quantum physics and spin chemistry, in a unique, ambitious, imaginative and genuinely synergetic research programme. We are working with lab-controlled testing conditions for the behavior of migratory songbirds and aim to understand how magnetic detection in the birds retinas involves the quantum spin dynamics. The project is located at the University of Oxford, UK and at the University of Oldenburg, Germany and collaborates with research groups from around the world. We look for someone wanting to work in Oldenburg and become part of a large diverse team working closely together on related questions and will have access to a wide range of superb modern equipment, techniques and expertise. Potential fields of science includes neuroethology, neuroscience, biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics.

You are looking for a Master thesis in an exciting field of research?
We are bringing together behavioral biology, biochemistry, retina research, electrophysiology, molecular biology and neuroanantomy in a unique, ambitious, imaginative and synergetic research group. We are working with lab-controlled testing conditions for the behavior of migratory songbirds and aim to understand magnetic detection occurring in the birds’ retinas, as well as the processing of all navigation-relevant cues in the brain. If you are considering doing a PhD and/or aim for a career in science, our working group could be a very good fit for you. Over the years many master students have contributed to important projects and thereby have become co-authors on significant scientific publications.
For the following research questions we are looking for intrinsically motivated master students:
- Cryptochromes and their role in the Retina
- Biochemistry of Cryptochromes
- Neuroanatomy of magnetoreception and vision
- Neuronal recordings from the retina
- Magnetoreception in migratory songbird behaviour
