Lebenslauf
Birger Kollmeier ist Leiter der Abteilung Medizinische Physik im Department für Medizinische Physik und Akustik der Fakultät für Medizin und Gesundheitswissenschaften der Universität Oldenburg. Er studierte Physik und Medizin in Göttingen und schloss 1986 seine Physik-Promotion im Bereich der Psychoakustik bei Prof. Dr. Manfred R. Schroeder ab. 1989 folgte die Promotion in Medizin bei Prof. Dr. Dr. Ulrich Eysholdt zum Thema binaurale Hörgeräte.
Nach seiner Habilitation in Physik wurde Kollmeier 1993 auf eine Professur an die Universität Oldenburg berufen und übernahm hier die Leitung der Abteilung Medizinische Physik. Seit 1996 ist er zusätzlich wissenschaftlicher Leiter der Hörzentrum Oldenburg GmbH (seit 2021 gGmbH) und war von 2001 bis zur Fusion mit dem Hörzentrum 2021 Sprecher des Kompetenzzentrums HörTech gGmbH. Im Zuge der Gründung und Weiterentwicklung des Institutsteils Hör-, Sprach- und Audiotechnologie am Fraunhofer-Institut für Digitale Medientechnologie IDMT ab 2008 wurde Kollmeier zudem Institutsteilleiter Hör-, Sprach- und Audiotechnologie HSA am Standort Oldenburg. Seit 2012 ist er Sprecher des Exzellenzclusters „Hearing4all“ (Oldenburg/Hannover), der sich seit 2019 in der zweiten Förderperiode befindet. Darüber hinaus ist er seit 1997 Mitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Audiologie (2003–2005 Präsident, 2006–2021 Vorstand) und war von 2012 bis 2021 im Präsidium der European Federation of Audiological Societies EFAS aktiv (2012–2017 Generalsekretär, 2018–2019 Stellv. Vorsitzender, 2020–2021 Vorsitzender). Von 2005 bis 2014 war Kollmeier Vorstandsmitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Medizinische Physik und ist derzeit Mitglied des Vorstandsrats der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Akustik.
Kollmeier hat bisher über 80 Promotionen betreut und ist Autor bzw. Co-Autor von über 450 wissenschaftlichen Publikationen in den Bereichen Hörforschung, Sprachverarbeitung, auditorische Neurowissenschaften und Audiologie. Er hat zudem mehrere wissenschaftliche Preise erhalten, darunter den Forschungspreis Technische Kommunikation der Alcatel-Lucent-Stiftung (2001), den Karl-Küpfmüller-Ring der TU Darmstadt (2009), den Wissenschaftspreis Niedersachsen (2011), den International Award der American Academy of Audiology (2012), den Deutschen Zukunftspreis (Preis des Bundespräsidenten für Technologie und Innovation, 2012) und die Glocker-Medaille (Auszeichnung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Medizinische Physik, 2017). Für seine wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten erhielt er den Hubert Forch-Gedächtnispreis (2015) und den „Oldenburger Bullen“ (2016).
