Module 6: In learning stations to the atomic nucleus
The structure of the atomic nucleus
Rutherford's atomic model does not contain any information about the exact structure of the atomic nucleus.
The following pages contain a range of information that will enable you to understand the structure of the atomic nucleus step by step. Work your way through the pages, work through the materials and tasks and then complete the tasks on this page.
Tasks
- Compile the information on the individual materials and answer the following questions:
- Which particles make up the nucleus of an atom?
- What does the position of an element in the periodic table depend on?
- How does the number of neutrons relate to the atomic number? Is the number of neutrons in the atomic nucleus of an element always the same?
- What is an isotope?
- Create a mental model of an atom based on your new findings and draw it.
- Compare your new model with the one you created previously.
- Formulate questions that you can answer with the new model.
- Formulate questions that cannot be answered by either the first or the second model.
