Do I have to complete an internship in Oldenburg before I start a degree programme?
No. It is not compulsory to do an internship before starting your degree programme. You can apply for the Uwi Bachelor's degree programme directly after graduating from high school, for example. However, internships are of course always a great enrichment for you, which is why we would like to encourage you to do one.
Previously completed internships or an FÖJ can usually be recognised as a contact internship, although further practical experience never hurts.
Do I have to take preliminary courses at the university at the beginning of my degree programme?
No. The university does offer preliminary courses in maths, physics and chemistry, but these are aimed at the respective subject students. The content goes beyond what is relevant for first-semester undergraduates. The lectures in maths, chemistry and physics that you attend in the first and second semesters are basic lectures that do not require or presuppose any special prior knowledge.
For maths, the online maths bridge course is recommended, either before the start of your studies to refresh your knowledge or to repeat topics during the course.
Which books should I buy for my studies?
If books are required, this is usually discussed in the first lectures of the various courses. Many books are now available online via the university library or you can find them second-hand on the university's Stud.IP notice board. You get access to this as soon as you are enrolled. It is also advisable to contact students from higher semesters, they may be able to lend you their books :)
So it's best to wait until the start of the semester to buy your books!
Are there any other materials or aids that I need in advance?
No, as with the books, you will be told everything you need in the respective courses. For example, magnifying glasses can be purchased during the identification course and lab coats from the chemistry student body.
It is also worth asking other year groups or visiting the notice board.
