The BSI is the federal cyber security authority and a driving force behind secure digitalisation in Germany. Our aim is to ensure the secure use of information and communication technology in government, business and society. With our support, information security should be understood as a prerequisite for digitalisation and implemented on one’s own initiative. We want to ensure that security aspects are taken into account right from the development stage of ITsystems and applications. After all, information security and digitalisation are inextricably linked.

The BSI’s responsibilities include, amongst other things (from https://www.bsi.bund.de/DE/Das-BSI/Mission-Statement/mission-statement_node.html):

• Information: We provide information on all key topics relating to information security.
• Advice: We provide advice on information security issues and support our target groups in implementing appropriate measures.
• Development: We design and develop standards, ITsecurity applications and products.
• Operational protection: We protect government networks and the federal administration from cyberattacks.
• Certification: We test, assess and certify ITsystems, services and individuals with regard to their characteristics and capabilities in the field of information security. Admission to ITsystems for the processing of classified information is also part of our remit.
• Supervision: We supervise operators of critical infrastructure and digital services with regard to their information security and act as the central reporting office for ITsecurity incidents and cyber-attacks in Germany.
