Stays abroad
Stays abroad are possible as part of the BSc Environmental Sciences programme. The programme does not have an explicit mobility window for a semester abroad. All periods from the third semester onwards are suitable. The most suitable period depends on the programme offered by the foreign university and your own individual study plans.
Semesters abroad are often undertaken as part of mobility programmes at partner universities (e.g. ERASMUS+, partner universities), but it is also possible to spend time at other foreign universities on your own initiative ("free mover").
Our ERASMUS representatives will be happy to provide information on this:
- Department of Environmental and Marine Sciences: (ICBM)
- Department of Landscape Ecology and Planning: Prof. Dr Ingo Mose (IBU)
Further information can be found at:
It is also possible to complete the contact internship abroad. In principle, the same rules apply as for an internship in Germany.
Recognition of credits
As a rule, credits earned abroad can be recognised in full. A proposal must be submitted for this. The aim is to credit foreign credits in the elective, accentuation and area of specialisation in such a way that an extension of the duration of studies is avoided. Overall, experience with credit transfer after studying abroad has been positive. Extended study periods can be avoided, provided that an appropriate number of credit points are earned abroad.
As many modules in the BSc Uwi run over two semesters and the semester and lecture periods abroad can vary greatly, careful planning is required. It may be advisable to talk directly to the module lecturers or the student advisory service.
Learning agreements are agreed within the framework of ERASMUS. However, it is recommended that you seek advice from the student counselling service regarding admission beforehand. Applications for recognition can be submitted independently of the learning agreements.
The following combinable options are available for the recognition of credits earned during a semester abroad:
The subject modules study abroad (mar991, mar992 and mar993) are used to recognise modules studied abroad in the compulsory elective or accent area to the extent of one or two Oldenburg modules (corresponding to 9, 10, 19 or 20 CP). A maximum of 1 compulsory elective module can be replaced. I.e. it is possible to complete 1 WP, 1 AZ, 1 WP+1AZ or 2 AZ modules in this way. The content does not have to be equivalent to Oldenburg modules. However, the modules must contribute to achieving the study objectives, i.e. they must generally be related to environmental science. The modules mar991, mar992 and mar993 are labelled as study abroad with the original module title(s) in the certificate. With regard to the number of credits, it is possible to balance several recognised modules or to combine smaller modules.
These modules have been available since WS2019/20, but they can also be used retroactively to recognise modules already completed abroad.
Credits earned abroad are recognised for an equivalent Oldenburg module , provided there are no significant differences in terms of the skills acquired. This means that there must be a suitable Oldenburg module which, in addition to the scope (number of CPs), also corresponds to or is similar to the modules studied abroad in terms of the competences acquired. The number of CPs is not limited. Only the Oldenburg module appears on the certificate.
In the area of specialisation, credits earned abroad can be recognised in the module "Study abroad" (stating the original title). This form is also suitable for non-subject-specific modules (languages, regional studies, etc.). The Examinations Office is responsible for recognition and processes proposals and makes the final decision.
In general, the number of credit points earned abroad should roughly correspond to the number of modules to be recognised. Smaller modules can be combined. As part of an overall assessment, credit points can be combined or divided up; slight deviations in the number of credit points may be possible. This is applied for on a case-by-case basis and decided by the Examinations Office.
In the European Credit Transfer System (i.e. also in Oldenburg), 1 CP (ECTS) corresponds to a workload of 30 hours, the workload in one semester is (on average) 30 CP, the degree programme comprises 6 semesters and 180 CP.
Credit points earned abroad outside the ECTS system usually have to be converted. The Examinations Office is responsible for this. Foreign universities (outside the ECTS) sometimes provide conversion factors. If these are not available, they must be determined by the Examinations Office. It may be useful to provide the Examinations Office with evidence or a plausible explanation of the conversion factors yourself. This can be done, for example, on the basis of the number of ECTS credits or hours (workload) per semester or with reference to the scope of the overall degree programme.
Financial support
The University of Oldenburg awards mobility grants of up to EUR 500 for study visits abroad (internships, specialised courses, language courses). The mobility grant is to be used to cover additional material expenses in the context of study-related stays abroad.
Short stays (less than 14 days) in Germany and abroad by students on Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at School V can be supported by centrally acquired study quality funds. The stay should be meaningfully related to the degree programme. It is possible, for example, to support a conference visit or a summer school in Germany or abroad. Proposals must be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Studies before the stay; the maximum funding amount is 400 euros after proof of the study-related costs. Please contact your supervisor or the Office the .
Further information on funding opportunities can be found on the university website at the International Office.
