Protocol: Workshop II - Rhetoric - talking about talking

Rhetoric - talking about talking

Speaker first introduces himself and why he is dealing with the topic: personal interest.

Exercise 1

The first exercise is an introductory exercise. This is a round of introductions.

Questions of the introduction round:

  • Who are you?
  • How do you rate your speaking skills?
  • Why are you here? What do you want to achieve in this workshop?

What you should bear in mind when introducing yourself:

  • clear language, short & concise
  • Pay attention to posture, gestures and facial expressions

A few ideas:

  • I'm here because I want to learn something and improve my speaking skills
  • Speaking skills have fallen asleep since school and have not developed since then
  • I'm here to learn what theories there are in terms of rhetoric
  • speaking skills have deteriorated since Corona because of the online semester
  • talkative guy, but presenting is something else again
  • Problem of nervousness
  • Workshop has added value for me
  • I'm on the FSR board and want to learn how to speak clearly in front of lots of people
  • It never hurts to work on your rhetoric
  • I talk to think and am therefore very verbose
  • I'm going to be a teacher, so it's good to improve my speaking skills
  • I can only speak when I'm drunk. The workshop will hopefully make it better sober too
  • I just go for it, sometimes something good comes out and sometimes not

Re-registering student to the workshop leader's ideas

  • Standing up is very important
  • be self-confident even then
  • Look straight ahead and don't look down
  • Some have added a personal grade, e.g. servus. That's always cool
  • A good speaker not only stands by their strengths but also their weaknesses
  • colloquial language is not a bad thing if you feel comfortable with it and that is the most important thing
  • Some people try to take on the role of someone who knows what they're talking about, someone who is adept at educational language. Just be yourself
  • You are multidimensional when you think and one-dimensional when you speak. That's why you often overstep yourself when speaking. So even when thinking, speak for yourself to sort out your thoughts
  • Of course, alcohol supports the flow of speech. You could also simply try this once because it makes you feel more confident. So just give it a try

Theory about communication

After the first exercise, the leader briefly introduces important theories.

Communication model according to Shannon-Weaver

Sender and receiver model

  • Connection is a channel
  • Orator: Wants to achieve something - should know what and believe in himself, gestures and facial expressions under control, clear and confident pronunciation
  • How high should I hold my hands when gesticulating? A comfortable height is in front of your stomach
  • Message: should be structured, coherent and simple. Call to action at the end
  • Channel: Pay attention to characteristics
  • Context: influences language and behaviour, influences stylistic devices
  • Feedback: pay attention to how what I say is received by others, are listeners interested etc, if you lose people, you have to do something as an orator

Exercise 2

The participants are asked to prepare and deliver a short point of view speech using the 5-sentence method.

Five-sentence method

  • 1st introductory sentence → Why am I speaking?
  • 2. declarative sentence 1 → What is?
  • 3. declarative sentence 2 → What should be?
  • 4th explanatory sentence 3 → What can be achieved?
  • Conclusion 5 → Call to action

Topics for the speech

  • The best sweet at the bakery
  • The best swimming pool ice cream
  • The best journey to the BuFak
  • The best fruit
  • The best snack
  • The best gadget

Next steps and giving speeches

Consideration of how to proceed. Questions about who would like to work on which topic. Answers were mixed, each topic is dealt with. This is followed by a short, silent work session to prepare for the speeches. This is held at the front and not from the seat. The leader goes round and discusses individual questions.

After 10 minutes, the speeches continue.

  • The start is with the sweet particles.
  • 2 workshop participants present their speech on the topic.
  • 4 workshop participants present their speech on the topic of the best swimming pool ice cream.
  • 8 workshop participants presented their speeches on the topic of the best journey to the BuFak.
  • The topic was very popular. A few impressions:
  • German Railways did not come off well.
  • Demand for heliports at all German universities. Training for the FSR for a helicopter driving licence.
  • Another idea was to travel together with a bus.
  • One was per train, a great experience when you fall asleep on the train and wake up somewhere in the middle of nowhere. It's great and you get to know a lot more people than if you travelled by car.
  • Another request: A party bus with supervised drinking that collects everyone and the start of the BuFak is then already on the bus
  • Another idea: The foot bus always runs, you can walk up to 120 km in one day, there are no travel expenses that you could then invest in beer.
  • 2 workshop participants present their speech on the topic of the best fruit.
  • After each speech there was a short feedback from the workshop leader.
  • At the end, the participants said goodbye and considered organising a bar camp to continue practising and discussing the topics, as there were many different opinions.
