Video-based lesson reflection
Video-based lesson reflection
Aims of the project
The project "Video-based lesson reflection", financed by funds from student contributions, has been running at the Didactic Centre (DiZ) since 2011. The project essentially pursues the following goals:
- Increasing the link between theory and practice in teaching,
- Supporting subject-specific reflections on individual video content for the development of students' didactic and educational skills.
Contents of the project
The central contents and tasks of the project consist of
- the production of lesson recordings and
- the development of possible application scenarios for these recordings in teacher training.
When producing the videos, the focus was on recording everyday lessons and avoiding the feeling of laboratory situations. This encourages students to identify with what is happening and allows an appropriate insight into the complexity of teaching processes. The recorded lessons cover a broad spectrum - from German lessons in an inclusive primary school class to an advanced chemistry course. Each individual recording in turn offers a variety of opportunities for reflection at different levels - from questions about the use of media to the question of (subject-specific) lesson objectives and the organisation of a lesson discussion to the use of rituals for structuring group work phases.
Teachers at the University of Oldenburg can borrow all the lesson recordings produced from the DiZ and use them for their seminars. In addition to the videos, which show the lesson from two different perspectives, overviews of the lessons, some of the teachers' planning documents and suggestions for reflection questions are provided.
In addition to the lesson recordings of entire lessons, video vignettes have also been created, which consist of video scenes from individual excerpts of a lesson and corresponding reflection prompts and tasks.
Support for teachers by the project or by the DiZ
Lecturers at the University of Oldenburg can take advantage of the following support options offered by the project:
- Teaching and science-based information and counselling for doctoral candidates and university lecturers for the planning and creation of module-related video vignettes
- Teaching and research-based information and counselling for university lecturers regarding the use of videos in teaching
- Provision of a comprehensive video pool for lending for use in teaching
- Provision of recording technology for the creation of your own lesson recordings
