Possible uses of videos in teaching
Possible uses of videos in teaching
General application possibilities
When using instructional videos in teaching, it is first necessary to determine the goal associated with the use of video in teaching. In principle, two different objectives can be distinguished when using videos (Sherin & van Es, 2005; Krammer & Reusser 2005, Reusser, 2005).
- Showing and illustrating desired behaviours with the aim of their appropriation by teachers (e.g. basic didactic patterns and forms of action)
- Reflection on demonstrated teaching situations with the aim of sharpening the perception of in-depth teaching structures and the quality of teaching-learning processes
There are many different ways of using videos to realise these goals, such as
- as an example for illustration
- as working material for students
- as part of portfolios
- as documentation of own teaching (e.g. in internships)
- as a counselling tool (e.g. in addition to/instead of classroom visits)
- as an occasion for reflection/discussion about one's own or other people's lessons
If the focus of the video is on reflecting on or analysing lessons, many different aspects can be analysed and reflected on, such as (Helmke & Helmke, 2004)
- analysing one's own actions from the perspective of different actors
- analysing one's own actions from different perspectives (subject-specific, didactic, pedagogical, learning psychology perspectives)
- Critically scrutinise their own knowledge and skills
- analyse the course of the learning process in comparison with their own ideas about the course of the learning process
- Compare their own planning with the actual course of the lesson
- Reflect on possible diagnostic interpretations of student actions
- Check self-perception
- scrutinise their understanding of their own role in teaching
The large number of these possible uses clearly shows the great potential of using videos in teacher training and how individually the use can be adapted to the respective objective of the course or the students' skills development.
