The maquis
The maquis on Giglio is dominated by hard-leaved plant species, such as the western strawberry tree(Arbutus unedo), the mastic bush (Pistacia lentiscus) and three different species of rockrose. It is an evergreen scrub forest that can grow to a height of one to two metres in the low maquis, but can also reach four to five metres in the high maquis. The maquis is usually a stage of degradation caused by grazing, clearing and periodic fires. The consequences are the displacement of a wide variety of species, e.g. the original holm oak forests and the promotion of the dominance of therophytes and plants with high seed production.
