Information on the practical phase in subject teaching
On this page, we would like to provide you with general and subject-specific information about the GHR 300 in Sachunterricht.
GHR 300 is the collective term for the practical phase in the Master of Education (G/HR) consisting of preparation, support and follow-up of the practical block and the project volume. All these elements are described individually below.
Modules prx560, 561 and 562 belong to the practical phase, while the project tape is mapped in module prx566 or, for older semesters, in module prx565.
The practical phase and project band must always be completed as a unit. This means that you cannot take one of them independently of the other.
You can be admitted to the practical phase and the project band in two cases:
Case 1: You have already obtained your Bachelor's degree.
Case 2: You have been provisionally admitted to the Master of Education programme, but have not yet completed all outstanding examinations for the Bachelor's degree. It is strongly recommended that you submit all outstanding examinations by mid-December in order to avoid a clash with the upcoming 18-week school internship. If proof of the Bachelor's degree is not provided to the Admissions office by submitting a certificate by 1 April, you will be De-registrated from the Master of Education programme.
Please note that the Admissions office has binding information on this.
Internship registration and school assignment
The current registration times as well as information on registration, hardship provision etc. can be found on the pages of the DiZ.
As a general rule, you must register for participation in the practical block of GHR 300 within the applicable periods. Late registration is only possible for students changing universities.
You can find the assignment regions for the practical block HERE. Each year, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs informs the universities of the practice schools that are available for the allocation of students. Students can specify two preferred districts when registering. The University of Oldenburg assigns students to the practice schools on this basis. The proviso here is that, if possible, you should not have to travel more than 70 minutes from Oldenburg main station.
Assignment is done centrally via the DiZ. The allocation procedure is completed by around mid-December each year. You will be informed of the allocation of places by email from the DiZ.
Practical phase - practical block
Preparatory events
If you have successfully registered for the GHR 300, you will start the preparatory courses in your subjects in the winter semester. We will go into the specifics for subject teaching below.
Despite having registered for the practical block, you must also register for the preparatory course! You can do this as normal by registering in Stud.IP.
The preparatory events in the subject of general studies take place on Fridays. We currently offer 3 preparatory events:
- Two seminars on Fridays 10am-12pm
- One seminar on Fridays 14-16
Within the practical phase, both the preparatory and the accompanying and follow-up events are organised and conducted in tandem teaching by a university lecturer and a lecturer in the practical phase (LiP).
Practical block, support and follow-up
The practical block is offered annually and is part of the practical phase. It begins in February and ends shortly before the summer holidays. During the practical block, you should be at your placement school on three days a week (at least 15 hours per week). Individual arrangements can be made with the school regarding the distribution of hours. You will observe, teach and also take part in extracurricular activities (e.g. school festivals, conferences, working groups, etc.).
Accompanying courses must be taken at the university during the practical block, which, like the preparatory courses, are offered on Fridays. The accompanying courses do not take place weekly. The dates will be announced by the GHR 300 team of subject teaching in the courses.
During the practical block and the accompanying courses, you will be supervised in small groups by a LiP. The composition of the participants in these groups will mainly depend on the region of your placement school. During the practical block, you will also be visited by your LiP, usually twice, directly in class at the practical school and then receive counselling. As a rule, one of the visits is a tandem visit accompanied by a university teacher.
The dates for the follow-up event are also announced in the seminars. These usually take place before the summer holidays.
Project band
The project is based on the guiding principle of research-based learning. The aim is to work on specific questions from the school context using suitable research and evaluation methods. The project is carried out in the school parallel to the practical block. The project band starts in the winter semester and extends over three semesters. The registration procedure for the project band is carried out via StudIP. You complete the project band in one of your subjects or in the educational sciences. A project band is offered annually in subject teaching.
Preparatory event
In the preparatory course for the project band in subject teaching, students develop initial questions on current and relevant subject-didactic or school development-related topics related to subject teaching. They acquire basic methodological knowledge and try it out using case studies. At the end of the semester, students should be able to enter the practical block with a well-developed research question and methodological tools to carry out their research project during the practical block.
The preparatory course is offered as a block seminar during the winter semester.
Support and follow-up
During the practical block, the accompanying courses for the project band in the subject of general studies also take place as a block seminar. In the accompanying course, questions regarding content and organisation as well as any methodological adjustments are discussed in the group.
In the follow-up event in the winter semester after the practical block, the students finally present their project results to the students of the next cohort.
Further information
We recommend that you first take a look at Annex 3b of the Master's examination regulations, which contains the regulations for the practical phase and the project volume. This is also available HERE on the DiZ website.
In principle, attendance is compulsory in the courses of the practical phase and the project volume.
If you have not fulfilled the qualitative and/or quantitative examination requirements, you will fail the practical phase and/or the project volume. Further information on this can also be found in Annex 3b of the MPO.
If you have any questions, please contact the relevant lecturer.
