Awarding of theses

ATTENTION: This information is valid from summer semester 2025!

Would you like to write a Bachelor's or Master's thesis in Sachunterricht?
Would you like to take part in a research project in Sachunterricht?

It is not possible to write a thesis in the field of educational sciences on the Bachelor's degree programme . Section 22 (1) of the Bachelor's examination regulations states: "The Bachelor's thesis must be written in one of the two subjects or interdisciplinary in both subjects if the subject is chosen in accordance with section 5 a)."

It is important to note that the accompanying course in Sachunterricht "Seminar zum bam in der Sachunterrichtsdidaktik" must be taken. Only a place in this module guarantees supervision in Sachunterricht or by the lecturers in Sachunterricht. If you do not receive a place, you will have to write your thesis in your second subject.

There is no option to take the mam in Educational Sciences and write your Master's thesis in Sachunterricht.
It would only be possible to take the mam in Educational Sciences in the case of "interdisciplinary work" in Educational Sciences and Sachunterricht - in this case, however, an examiner would have to come from the field of Educational Sciences.

The bam/mam module is offered in the summer and winter semesters.
In order to have more time to find a topic and plan your final thesis, we recommend taking the bam or mam module in the semester before the planned submission.

Information on the allocation of thesis topics from summer semester 2025

At the same time, you must register for a place on the bam or man module for subject teaching by 28 February or 30 August at the latest,if you have not already done so.

  3. Selection and allocation

FAQ (... or what to consider)

The basis for writing a Bachelor's or Master's thesis is the applicable examination regulations. examination regulations at the University of Oldenburg

  • Does the regulation also apply to interdisciplinary work with educational sciences or special education?

The allocation procedure is linked to the places for the bam or mam module in subject teaching, so you only need to submit a mini-exposé as soon as you (have) been awarded a place on one of these modules.

  • What do I need to bear in mind when specifying my desired reviewers?

At least one reviewer must be a member of the professors' group or a Privatdozent in Sachunterricht.

  • We would like to write the thesis in pairs, is that possible?

Yes, that is possible. If you want to write in pairs, you must submit 2 mini-exposés, as the supervision of this one paper will then correspond to two papers in terms of allocation of places and marking. Please speak to your first assessor in advance to clarify which research questions should and can be answered in each case.
The scope of the thesis is usually doubled, whereby it must be clearly described who has written which part of the thesis. They are assessed individually (see examination regulations).

  • Can I email the mini-exposé to my email address before I have been allocated a place in the bam or mam module?

We do not recommend this, because only a guaranteed place in the bam or mam module guarantees supervision and assessment.

  • Do I have to write a mini-exposé even though I have already completed the bam or mam module?

In principle, all students who wish to submit their final thesis in subject teaching in the summer semester 2025 or later and have already taken a place on the bam or mam module in subject teaching or will do so in the summer semester 2025 must submit a mini-exposé.
This is important as we also use the submission for documentation purposes. You do not need to worry, your place and your acceptance for the assessment will of course be retained.

  • Do I have to write a mini-exposé even though I don't want to submit my thesis until the following semester?

In principle, all students who want to submit their final thesis in the subject area and have been offered a place in the bam/mammodule must submit a mini-exposé.
If, for example, you have a place in the bam/mam module in the winter semester, you must also submit a mini-exposé in this semester.
In both seminars, we work specifically on your research questions and topics. Therefore, please only attend the seminar if you have at least roughly considered a topic and a research question. This is important as we also use the submission for documentation purposes.

  • Are there any other tips for writing a thesis?

As soon as you have a place in the bam or mam module, courseware with lots of information is available to you.

  • What do I need to bear in mind if I want to conduct a survey in schools?

The DiZ has put together an information page: https://uol.de/diz/transfer/umfragen-und-erhebungen-in-schulen.

General information on writing a thesis

  • Length: 40-60 (max. 80) pages (approx. 1500 characters/page, font size e.g. Times New Roman 12 pt or Arial 11 pt with 1.15 to 1.5 line spacing)
  • As a rule, the Master's thesis is between 60-80 pages, the Bachelor's thesis is usually between 40-60 pages.
  • The appendix is not included in this page count.
  • Larger files (audio, video or transcripts) can be stored on a data carrier (SD card or similar) or in a Nextcloud folder. This data attachment will be explicitly included in the table of contents and in the appendix with reference to the data.
  • Your thesis will be submitted digitally as a pdf file (searchable and without password!). Please discuss with the reviewers in advance whether a printed version is desired.
  • §Section 22 (1) BPO: "The Bachelor's thesis should show that the student is able to work independently on a problem from one of the chosen subjects using scientific methods within a given deadline."
  • §Section 23 (1) MVO: "The Master's thesis should show that the student is able to work independently on a problem using scientific methods within a given deadline. Schedule

In addition to the academic part, writing your thesis also requires good organisation.

The schedule is intended to provide an overview of the deadlines and steps. Two different plans apply in order to get the grade entered by 31 March or 30 September respectively, which are linked to the respective bam or mam seminar.

In order to have more time to find a topic and plan your thesis, we recommend taking the bam or mam module in the semester before the planned submission.

Important: The dates given here for registering the thesis and the resulting submission date are expressly a recommendation to ensure that the final grade is entered by the date given. If you are not dependent on this, you can also register or submit your thesis later.
