Description:
Sustainability at the Carl von Ossietzky University
Since the University of Oldenburg was founded in 1973, research in the field of environmental protection has always been an integral part of research and teaching. The university can thus look back on more than thirty years of problem-orientated and interdisciplinary environmental and social research, which is being continued with regard to research on sustainability. This field thus also reflects the University's traditional commitment to research.
In order to be able to capture and work on all essential aspects of a sustainability strategy, this is based on two fundamental principles at the University of Oldenburg. On the one hand, the focus is on ecological problems, while on the other hand the associated social and economic effects are also taken into consideration.
In addition to the day-to-day research work carried out by the university's institutes (Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment(ICBM), Center for Environmental Modelling (CEM), Centrefor Wind Energy Research(For Wind) and Oldenburg Center for Sustainability Economics and Management(CENTOS)), the area of sustainability is also given high priority in teaching. By combining research and teaching, the University of Oldenburg has developed into a leading institution in the field of environmental and sustainability research.
Sustainability reporting
Research in the field of sustainability and thus in the generation of solutions to socially relevant problems must inevitably be interdisciplinary. It therefore networks different scientific disciplines and involves non-scientific actors in the problem area in its research in order to arrive at feasible recommendations for action.
This is the only way to develop successful strategies for adapting to climate change or developing sustainable food cultures. In terms of teaching, Carl von Ossietzky University is currently running an interdisciplinary programme in this area, which is run by the chairs of "Ecological Economics"(economics) and "Very Large Business Applications" (business informatics).
Through the project groups "Sustainability Reporting at Universities" and "Sustainability Reporting in Web2.0", students are to jointly develop indicators for a sustainability report based on the "Sustainability Reporting Guidelines" of the Global Reporting Initiative and implement these in a software for the creation of sustainability reports with ecological, economic and social data of the university.
On the following pages you can find out all about this interdisciplinary project at Carl von Ossietzky University. We would also like to keep you up to date on the current status of the project and will of course be happy to answer any further questions you may have.
