Project objectives

Lidar Knowledge Europe (LIKE) is an Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded by the European Commission, which fosters training and education of young researchers on emerging laser-based wind measurement technology and its translation into various industrial applications. Over the last two decades, Doppler lidars (light detection and ranging) that measure the wind in the atmosphere remotely, have seen a reduction in price and an increase in reliability, mainly driven by European universities and companies serving the expanding wind energy industry. This also opened up possibilities for new applications in other areas.

The main concept of ITN LIKE is to train 15 young early stage researchers at different world-leading European academic institutions and industrial companies. Each of these will work on a separate research topic, expected to result in a PhD. Aside from this personal goal of aiming for the PhD title, these researchers will also aid the establishment of strong interdisciplinary relations between industry and academia. This is done by employing them at different research institutes, universities and companies, and having planned secondments at one or multiple partners within the LIKE project.

With the help of these 15 researchers, LIKE will test and refine Doppler lidar technology and foster its expansion to various areas of application. On the one hand, LIKE promotes wind energy applications, such as wind resource mapping using scanning lidars and control of individual wind turbines or entire wind farms in order to increase power production and reduce mechanical loads. On the other hand, other topics covered within the LIKE project are e.g. the mapping of unusual atmospheric flow patterns over airports in real-time and exploring wind and turbulence under extreme conditions at the sites of future European bridges. The 15 researchers are expected to have a lot of social and professional interaction, and technical knowledge exchange between their dedicated topics within the ITN LIKE project.
