Fortunately, a growing number of studies on learners' conceptions of the Internet, computers, smartphones and other computer science related topics is the academic response to constructivist epistemology. However, many of these contributions unfortunately end after a presentation and discussion of the results, without concrete recommendations for teachers on how to methodologically deal with (typical mis-)conceptions. abstract = {The ability to categorize concepts is an essential capability for human thinking and action. On the one hand, the investigation of such abilities is the purview of psychology; on the other hand, subject-specific educational research is also of interest, as a number of research works in the field of science education show. For computer science education, no corresponding studies are currently available. However, investigating how learners build categories from a choice of given terms may be useful for several reasons; for example, learners’ perspectives on relations between terms, as well as potential misconceptions, can be detected and made available to educators aiming to improve lesson planning. Therefore, we conducted an empirical study with 490 German students from primary to higher education, in which we presented them with 23 information technology-related terms (such as computer, Facebook, hard drive, virus) on a questionnaire, with the task of assigning these to self-defined categories (and then giving their categories individual names). In the results, we identified a number of potential categorization strategies the participants might have used to categorize the given terms; these include generalization, purpose, place of use, state, part-whole relationships, and association. Recognizing and defining such categorization strategies can help teachers construct learner-adequate concept maps of the domain, which helps foster the elaboration of learners’ knowledge structures in this field. We found that the younger participants used less abstract names for their categories, and observed that some participants had difficulty categorizing some terms (such as robot and 3D).},

abstract = {When it comes to studying learners' perceptions, the most common methods range from arranged questionnaires to carefully structured interviews. While the former are arguably inadequate to understand learners' perceptions correctly due to the lack of response, the latter lack the ability to flexibly focus on interesting points during the interviews. Since the importance of learners' perceptions is well-known and many Computer Science concepts are not covered yet, we want to introduce a technique from the field of social psychology and apply it to the domain of Computer Science Education. With our field report on “Utilizing the Repertory Grid Method to Investigate Learners' Perceptions of Computer Science Concepts” we want to encourage this qualitative approach in this field. We present our application of this method in order to study five 11- to 13-year-old secondary school students' conceptions of the Internet and the corresponding IT devices. It turns out that the technique is a promising alternative when it comes to studying learners' perceptions indeed.},

Fehlvorstellungen der Lernenden einen direkten Einfluss auf den Lernprozess haben: sowohl negativ als auch positiv. Speziell für die Informatik gilt, dass Lernende heutzutage von Beginn an in einer Welt aufwachsen, die von informatischen Artefakten und Systemen nahezu vollständig durchdrungen ist. Sie beobachten sie, interagieren mit ihnen und formen so Vorstellungen über ihre Funktionsweisen und Eigenschaften. Sie bilden somit bereits im Alltag und vor dem Beginn jeglicher Schulbildung kohärente Konzeptionen über zentrale Gegenstände und Inhalte der Informatik. Im Rahmen dieses Workshops werden zunächst verschiedene methodische Ansätze und erste Ergebnisse zu Erhebungen solcher Lernervorstellungen vorgestellt. abstract = {When teaching object oriented modeling using the objects first approach the course typically starts with creating some kind of object models. We found that it is very hard for our students to judge whether those first models they create are good and useful ones or not. This is even a hard task for experienced programmers who do object oriented modeling for the first time. To overcome this problem we use the active learning approach. We let the students articulate and discuss their modeling decisions from the very beginning. This enables the students to explain, to question and to correct their modeling decisions. To allow a lively discussion among beginners and avoid misunderstandings our models should not be too complex. And the models should be formal enough to be translatable into an object oriented program. We use UML object diagrams first and then class diagrams for modeling data structure. To model behavior, we use two kinds of semi-formal textual descriptions and so-called rule diagrams. These representations allow our students to judge on the quality of their models. This paper will present our specific form for introducing objects first and our experience with it.},
