Water experimentation days in the autumn holidays 2025

Water experimentation days in the autumn holidays 2025

We offer children and young people a wide range of experiments on the subject of water. Participation is free of charge and we provide transport support. Each programme is self-contained and has 20 places.

Registration by 9 October

Activities for 10-13 year olds

Experimenting with the all-rounder water

Hydropower and energy

When? Wednesday, 15 October 2025, 10 am - 1 pm

Where? University of Oldenburg, Room W2-1-120

What will happen?
In this course we will build a dam and a water wheel. This will generate electricity. But how can we then store it if it is not used directly, and what are dams useful for? We continue to construct and experiment.

How does the water get into the tap?

A discovery tour through the Nethen waterworks and hands-on water experiments

When? Friday, 17 October 2025, 10 am - 1 pm

Where? Nethen waterworks

What happens?
We go on a discovery tour through the waterworks: How does drinking water treatment work? Where does the water for our drinking water come from? How and where is it extracted? And how does it get to my home? After a short breakfast break, we will explore the special properties of water. You can do your own research and try things out at experimental stations.

Activities for 13-16 year olds

Experimenting with water power and electricity

When? Thursday, 16 October 2025, 10 am - 1 pm

Where? University of Oldenburg, Room W2-1-120

What happens?
In this programme, we build and test dams and turbines to generate electricity. We will also construct a model of a pumped-storage power station and use experiments to explain its significance for the power supply. Finally, we explore the question of how much energy is contained in moving water and the dangers associated with it.

The coast in the laboratory - we experiment

When? Tuesday, 21 October 2025, 10 am - 1 pm

Where? University of Oldenburg, Room W2-1-120

What happens?
In this programme, we will find out how the disorderly ripples in the Wadden Sea are created and experimentally search for an explanation. We use a model to investigate what causes high and low tides and explore how the land on the coast can be protected from storm surges. In doing so, we test different ways of coastal protection using models.

Coastal experiments on water and waves

When? Monday, 20 October 2025, 10 am - 1 pm

Where? University of Oldenburg, Room W2-1-120

What's happening?
In this programme, we examine the bottom of the mudflats. We will explore how the special wave forms are created in the Wadden Sea. We will also find out what ebb and flow are all about. Finally, we will explore the question of how our house on the coast can be protected from high waves.

How does the water get into the tap?

A discovery tour through the Nethen waterworks and hands-on water experiments

When? Wednesday, 22 October 2025, 10 am - 1 pm

Where? Nethen waterworks

What happens?
We go on a discovery tour through the waterworks: How does drinking water treatment work? Where does the water for our drinking water come from? How and where is it extracted? And how does it get to my home? After a short breakfast break, we will explore the special properties of water. You can research and try things out for yourself at experimental stations.
