Of all the celestial bodies, the moon is the closest to Earth. A commercial aeroplane could reach it in about two weeks. However, you can't fly to the moon in aeroplanes. But how do you get there? And when you arrive, can you just get out and walk around? And if not, why fly there at all?

The Earth and the Moon were formed together a long time ago in a huge cosmic collision. Today they are very different from each other. On the moon there is no air to breathe, there are no rivers, no lakes, no wind, no plants and no animals. Nevertheless, the moon is an exciting destination! Humans could soon begin to colonise the moon to use it as a base for further excursions into space. How do you think this could work? We'll find out together in this lecture.

If you want to explore the world's oceans, you have to go out on them: There are more than 20 research vessels in Germany alone - from the large research icebreaker "Polarstern" to the small research boat in the Wadden Sea. But how do scientists actually work on such a ship? How do they take water samples from a depth of 6,000 metres? What happens if someone is seasick? And what do the researchers do on board when they are not conducting research?

The lecture takes you on an expedition across the oceans - from the icebergs of Antarctica to the blue water deserts of the tropics and the East Frisian Islands. You will also learn why marine explorers must not be forgetful when packing their suitcases and that it is Sunday twice a week at sea.

Right or wrong?

We live with animals, keep pets that are our friends and go to the zoo to see animals and their way of life. When animals suffer, we sympathise. At the same time, we use animals for food and clothing. If the benefit to us humans is great, we treat animals with less empathy. We also often use plants and our environment in a way that seems right for us.
Is our treatment of nature actually fair? Should we do something differently than we have done so far? And who decides what is right or wrong? We want to get to the bottom of these exciting questions together in this lecture.
