The peak performance of our hearing
Prof. Dr Dr Birger Kollmeier (Institute of Physics) When musicians play, their sounds mix and somehow reach our ears - and what happens then? How do we manage to get the wave salad from our ears into our heads in such a way that it becomes an earworm? And what is the function of the hair cells in our ears, which we can not only eavesdrop on but also make dance? If you want to explore these questions, you will come across many top performances of our hearing: For example, we can use our ears to determine the length of a garden hose with millimetre precision. And we can also hear whether hot or cold coffee is being poured into a cup. In the lecture, we want to find out what else we can do with our ears. Can adults hear just as well as children? And what about grandparents? Why do they no longer hear some things? We will try to answer these questions - and we will also meet one or two "creatures" from the Hörgarten.
