The time of the light bulb is over
Prof. Dr Mathias Wickleder (Institute of Pure and Applied Chemistry)
Our world is inconceivable without light. We take light so much for granted that we rarely think about how light is produced in the first place. The days of the good old light bulb are long gone: Today we use halogen lamps, xenon lamps, energy-saving lamps and, increasingly, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in their place. These modern light sources contain a lot of knowledge and a great deal of chemistry, as special chemical compounds and chemical reactions are used to produce light. In the lecture, such reactions are demonstrated and the secrets of our modern lighting are revealed so that we can see and recognise light with completely different eyes in the future: Chemistry illuminates.
