General tips
The creation of effective learning videos requires good planning. The following general tips should help you with this (source Thriving Online: A Guide for Busy Educators - Simple Book Publishing (pressbooks.pub), Chapter 29).
- Choose a meaningful title and clearly categorise the video in the learning objectives of your course.
- Create a (rough) script, for example by writing down the critical key points or sketching out the course of the video. The more organised you are here, the quicker you can record the video afterwards.
- Avoid perfection. You want to record a good video and will probably need several passes. However, it doesn't have to be a perfect or even highly professional video in the end. You can, for example, leave small pauses or filler words, which will look more natural and won't affect the quality. Speak in a relaxed conversational tone as if you were sitting opposite your viewers.
- Record short videos (2-6 minutes). After six minutes, the attention span decreases drastically when watching an educational video. It is therefore better to record several short clips than one long video. You can also break up your video with interactive elements to loosen it up.
- Use more visual elements and less text. Text-based information can be conveyed differently. The strength of a video lies in visual information so that students can watch it and follow your explanations at the same time.
