Screen recordings
Screen recordings
A screen recording, also known as a screencast, is a recording of one’s own screen, which can then be made available as a video. This might, for example, consist of the slides from a lecture accompanied by the relevant explanations as an audio recording – but the lecturer can also be recorded at the same time. Screencasts are also frequently used to explain software or a programme, for example, as they show the processes and the mouse pointer.
Long lectures with audio should be avoided; in such cases, face-to-face teaching is preferable. However, short clips (maximum 15 minutes) can be a useful supplement to face-to-face lectures or seminars and can, for example, answer frequently asked questions from students.
Recording screencasts with PowerPoint
The simplest way to record a screencast – particularly for digitising existing presentations – is directly within PowerPoint. Go to the ‘Slide Show’ tab and select ‘Record Slide Show’. You can then record audio for each slide and, if you wish, record yourself on camera at the same time. You can then export the entire presentation as a video. A brief guide can be found in the following video or this PDF document.
If you would like to record content other than PowerPoint presentations, you can use the web-based Opencast Studio. You can find an example of a screen recording created with Opencast Studio here.
OBS Studio is also free of charge and offers you many setting options for sound and screen. It looks very complicated at first, but is actually very easy to use. ( Video to get started)
Macbook users can also record their screen with QuickTime Player via File - New Screen Recording .
Further instructions for screen recordings can be found in the e-didactics blog.
Screen recording directly from a Stud.IP course
If you already know that you want to make screencasts available frequently in a particular course, you also have the option of recording them directly in your course. The finished videos can then be viewed immediately by the participants and you can avoid downloading them to your own computer and uploading them to the course. To use this option, activate the Opencast plugin in your event under Administration .
