Researcher wants to find out how children imagine historical life

Painting competition at Schloss Evenburg in Leer runs until 31 August

Oldenburg. Dazzling dresses, opulent banquets or fighting knights: how do children visualise everyday life in times long past at Evenburg Castle in Leer? That's what educationalist Dr Silke Bakenhus from the Didactics of Science department at the Institute of Educational Sciences at the University of Oldenburg wants to find out. She is therefore asking primary school children to draw pictures of how they imagine life at the 375-year-old moated castle used to be and make them available for research.

From 1 July to 31 August, painting tables with materials will be available in the banqueting hall at Schloss Evenburg. Children can paint the pictures directly on site and put them in a picture box. If you like, you can enter your picture in a prize draw at the same time and win book prizes.

Bakenhus is analysing the children's drawings as part of her project "Quellenarbeit im Sachunterricht" (QuaSU), which focuses on the historical perspective of non-fiction teaching. She is particularly interested in the children's pictures of Evenburg Castle to see what ideas about life in a castle in the past and what prior knowledge the pictures suggest. The results of the research are to be incorporated into the development of new learning materials for general knowledge lessons and at the same time contribute to the further development of the evaluation method. The Oldenburg University Society (UGO) is supporting the research project and the associated painting competition.
