Important programmes and websites
Microsoft Office
For your studies you will need a decent programme for word processing and presentations. You can of course choose the completely free version, but with your university email address you can get Microsoft Office for free.
Chemdraw Professional
When it comes to drawing molecules, reaction equations and reaction mechanisms, ChemDraw is an essential tool. In some modules, the use of ChemDraw may even be a prerequisite .
Whilst many functions are fairly intuitive to find, there are plenty of tips and tricks for creating neat-looking drawings. A video covering the ChemDraw basics and the ChemDraw Wizard is a good place to start.
Here’s a guide on how to install ChemDraw on your computer: https://uol.de/chemie/studium/chemdraw
VPN / Global Protect
If you need access to the campus network from home, for example to open certain folders or visit websites that can only be used via the campus network (Reaxys, Scifinder, search engines for papers), you need a VPN. A connection to the campus network is also required to use ORIGIN.
The university provides VPN access for all students.
You can find instructions here.
ORIGIN
The ORIGIN software is used for the analysis and graphical representation of measurement data. ORIGIN 2019 for Windows operating systems is available as a school licence at School V of the University of Oldenburg.
Installation instructions and the installation file can be obtained from IT services.
Mestrenova
In the introductory organic chemistry practical and the integrated synthesis practical, you will need to analyse NMR spectra when writing your lab reports (Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry). This works best with Mestrenova.
You can find installation instructions and further information at https://uol.de/itdienste/services/software (Mnova) or in the study group: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance on Stud.iP
Reaxys & Scifinder
In the basic practical course in organic chemistry and the integrated synthesis practical course, you will be faced with the task of finding synthesis routes for various molecules and then producing them. So that you are not left to your own devices, there are two search engines in which the desired molecule can be drawn and then searched for, similar to ChemDraw.
You need access to the campus network for both websites. So if you want to work from home, you can only do so via the aforementioned VPN.
Reaxys can be used without further admission to the campus network.
With Scifinder you have to register first, you can find instructions here.
Other useful sites for internships
The University of Oldenburg’s database information system shows you, at a glance, all the databases available to you and also tells you whether you can access the sites directly or need to be connected to the campus network.
A few noteworthy sites are listed below.
Gestis Substance Database
In the Gestis Substance Database, you’ll find everything you need to know about the physical properties, handling and disposal of most common chemicals. If you’re looking for H and P phrases for a specific chemical in a clear, organised format, this site is always a good place to start.
Spectral Database for Organic Compounds
Are you currently taking part in the introductory organic chemistry practical and aren’t sure whether the signals in your NMR measurement are your desired product or just noise? Then you can find spectra for many organic substances on this site, which will make your analysis a little easier.
On this page, you can simulate spectra for various compounds. But be careful: the simulated spectra should only serve as a rough guide and should under no circumstances be taken as fact.
Laboratory Supplies Catalogue
If something has broken in the lab or you simply need to get hold of something, you can look up the name and item number here, which you ’ll need to fill in your order form . However, this only works on the campus network.
Reference management / Citavi
Reference management software is used to collect literature for the preparation of an academic publication and provides an overview of your own literature collection as well as enabling you to manage individual projects.
As you will be writing lots of lab reports and, of course, your Bachelor’s thesis, you will need reference management software to keep track of everything and to cite your sources correctly.
The style guide from *Angewandte Chemie* is usually used for the reference list; here are two examples:
