At the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, the institutional framework for the programme is the Laboratory for Critical Migration and Border Regime Research (Head: Prof. Hess). The laboratory represents an interdisciplinary research platform that currently brings together and scientifically supervises 16 research projects at doctoral and post-doctoral level from all German-speaking countries on border constructions in migration society. The social and cultural science research focuses in particular on the modes of regulation and knowledge that attempt to "manage", control, administer, categorise and represent migrations. This perspective has led the laboratory to focus on border regime research, which critically analyses the "doing border" in different regions of Europe and the world. This makes the laboratory one of the few research contexts in the field of border studies to be headed by a professor in Germany, which is also well connected with leading international locations for border research in Europe, Canada and the USA via the network of critical migration and border regime research. With the academic appointment of Prof Moritz Ege, the expertise has been expanded to include a perspective on racism theory and popular culture. There are also established collaborative relationships with colleagues in ethnology, sociology and historical India studies within the Centre for Theories and Methods of Cultural Studies and the Göttingen Centre for Gender Studies, which focuses on gender and migration as part of its series of events and colloquia.
