Living & housing in Oldenburg & Emden
Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences, with around 3,900 students, and the CvO University of Oldenburg, with 12,000 students, are among the medium-sized universities in Germany. They have numerous advantages that universities of this size have to offer without having to accept the disadvantages typical of large institutions. You don't get lost in a maelstrom of anonymity and sterility and there is a pleasant learning atmosphere.
The degree programmes are spread across five locations, so there is no mass activity at the individual study locations. The study programme is characterised by an almost informal atmosphere. Students know their "professor" here. Service and personal support are very important.
In terms of the cost of living, it is generally cheaper to study in small and medium-sized cities. The cost of living in the north-west is significantly lower than in urban centres. The Oldenburg Student Union provides halls of residence in Oldenburg and Emden, some of which are located in the immediate vicinity of the campus and offer a variety of housing options. New, modern halls of residence have been built in the past, so that long waiting periods are not to be expected at the moment.
To find an affordable flat, you should also enquire about membership of a housing association. However, there are also affordable flats available on the free housing market (compared to urban centres).
Students also appreciate the fact that it is easy to get from one place to another for daily student life (campus, shopping facilities, train station, city centre) by bike. It is also possible to do without a car, although the two study locations Oldenburg and Emden are approx. 90 km apart. The bus and train connections are optimal and with the semester public transport pass, public transport can be used daily free of charge in the respective study locations and in the wide catchment area (Emden, Oldenburg, Osnabrück, Hanover, Bremen, Hamburg).
But there is also plenty to discover outside the university. Oldenburg is a city with history. The city's profile and living atmosphere are characterised by a wide range of public and private cultural institutions. With a large selection of theatres, museums, libraries, art and sports clubs, there is never a dull moment. Why not visit the basketball team EWE-Baskets or the VFL-Oldenburg women's handball team at a Bundesliga match in the EWE Arena?
