In the USA, books have been 'banned' for a long time, but especially since the start of Donald Trump's second term in office. Specifically, this means that they are censored or disposed of in schools, libraries or communities and may no longer be discussed in class. In January, Trump issued an executive order banning diversity, inclusion and Gender equality as teaching topics. His aim is to educate children to have a "patriotic admiration for the nation".

This primarily affects books on topics such as racism, queer life, feminism, sex education and politics. Around 16,000 book bans have already been documented. The aim is to deny children and young people in particular access to education on socially relevant topics. This is a massive restriction of freedom of expression and education and an attack on democratic values.
