Why are men?!
a lecture by Kim Posster in the series "MÄNNLICHKEIT verraten"

12.11.2025 at 6:30 pm

in the BIS Hall at the University of Oldenburg and online

Kim Posster poses the simple but provocative question "Why are men?" and analyses today's male conditioning. In doing so he presents the structural function of masculinity: Men should, must and want to be men. Permanent self-discipline, competition and emotional armouring not only serve the patriarchy, but are also systemically relevant for capitalist structures. The urge to prove oneself secures one's own status and ensures the continued existence of an exploitative system.

The lecture will be hybrid. Participation is possible online as well as in presence in the BIS hall of the University of Oldenburg. For online participation you can register here and will be sent the online room.

An overview of Kim Posster's texts and publications can be found on this page: https: //kimposster.noblogs.org/

The lecture of this programme series is sponsored by the SchwuRef.

Reading Right-wing populism and homosexuality

06.11.2023 at 16:00

in the BIS Hall, University of Oldenburg

Homosexuals are increasingly being integrated into the populist "we" of the far right. Cultural anthropologist Patrick Wielowiejski accompanied a group of gay members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) for two years. Based on their narratives and practices, he analyses the political imaginary of the contemporary right in this "ethnography of enmity". It becomes clear that the line between "normal" and "perverse" is no longer drawn between "hetero" and "homo", but between essentialist and emancipatory lifestyles and practices. At the same time, Wielowiejski critically reflects on his research experiences and thus provides a nuanced insight into a political field that is increasingly threatening democratic cohesion.

Dr Patrick Wielowiejski (er/ihn) works as a right-wing extremism expert at the Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte e.V. in Berlin, where he is working on an interdisciplinary project on the question of whether an AfD ban procedure would have a chance of success. Prior to this, he was coordinator of the DFG research group "Law - Gender - Collectivity" and a research assistant at the Institute for European Ethnology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he was awarded his doctorate in July 2023. The dissertation, which was honoured with the Humboldt Prize 2024, was published by Campus Verlag under the title "Rechtspopulismus und Homosexualität: Eine Ethnografie der Feindschaft" (Open Access).

"Men - The Patriarchy"
a video essay in the "MÄNNLICHKEIT verraten" series

04.11.2025 at 8 pm

at the university cinema Gegenlicht Uni Oldenburg

Together we will watch the video essay by Vertraut und Seltsam "Männer - Das Patriarchat".

The video essay is a feminist manifesto about the structural violence of patriarchal masculinity. Linda from Vertraut und Seltsam criticises toxic images of masculinity, violence against women, the "red pill" and incel scene, as well as the myth of the good, "critical" man. Historically and sociologically, she describes the emergence of patriarchy and its links with capitalism, racism and colonialism. What is needed is radical change: genuine solidarity, autonomous feminist practice - beyond male recognition or conformity.

The film will be shown at the Unikino Gegenlicht.

You can find the programme and further information here.

Incels, Alphas, Bosstransformation - soldierly masculinity and digital fascism
a lecture by Veronika Kracher Video essay "MÄNNLICHKEIT verraten" (betrayed masculinity)

20.10.2025 at 6:30 pm

in the BIS hall at the University of Oldenburg and online

Young men are increasingly radicalising to the right and anti-feminist influencers are playing a major role in this. They promise their followers that they can go from loser to alpha: through emotional brutalisation and the devaluation of everything that has a female connotation. This lecture gives an insight into the world of thought of these alpha males and shows why neoliberal and fascist masculinity hardly differ.

The lecture will take place in hybrid form. Participation is possible online as well as in presence in the BIS hall of the University of Oldenburg. You can register for online participation here and will be sent the online room a few days before the event. An overview of Veronika Kracher's work can be found on her website: https://kracher.press/

The National Socialist dictatorship labelled homosexual men as so-called "enemies of the people". The researcher and psychologist Jürgen Wenke describes what this meant in concrete terms and what effects it had on these men in an illustrated lecture with photos, pictures and numerous original documents from the Nazi era. A love letter that was kept becomes the fate of both the recipient (26) and the writer (32). The lives of the two men and the effects of persecution on them, their families of origin and the social impact as well as positive examples of a culture of remembrance are part of the presentation.

Film evening - Paragraph 175 -

01 December 2024 at 18:00h

in the university cinema Gegenlicht stage 1

For years, many LGBTIQ+ people have been fleeing from various countries in the post-Soviet space, especially since 2022, when Russia began its war of aggression against Ukraine and passed inhumane laws against LGBTIQ+ people. They cannot live happily and safely in their home countries, as their states either do not protect them or actively persecute them. But how safe do they feel in Germany? Despite a comparatively open social climate, many of them experience discrimination and prejudice. We will examine what their lives are like in Germany and what rights and opportunities they are entitled to. Finally, we will discuss how Germany can improve its protective measures to promote the safety and integration of this vulnerable group.

But how do I identify right-wing ideas and what is the best way to counter them? Why is language so important?  In the "LOUD against the right" workshop, we will sharpen your awareness of right-wing populist language and its effects, self-harm and creeping brutalisation. Sex work Queen-Migrant read

27.02.2024 at 16:00

in A01-005

No professional field is discussed as controversially as sex work and prostitution. The tensions in the debate position prostitution as violence against women, as patriarchal and capitalist relations of exploitation or as a self-determined form of sexual services. Perspectives on queerness and migration in the informal economy tend to be overlooked, made invisible or segregated. And what does the situation of queer migrant sex workers look like? How
much support do they actually need? How well does the Prostitution Protection Act work? What can self-determined queer-migrant sexual work look like? In this event, there will be queer-migrant interpretations of sexual work to get into conversation together.

Tom Fixemer [tom/no pronouns] (M.A., research assistant at the Department of Sociology of Diversity, University of Kassel) focuses on work and research in the areas of intersectionality, multidimensional discrimination, sexual research, sexualized violence and protection concepts in organizations.

Reading QUEERULIEREN

29.11.2023 at 6:00 pm

at the Queer Center, Ziegelhofstrasse 83, 26121 Oldenburg

Look forward to a multimedia and interactive presentation of the anthology "QUEERULIEREN: Störmomente in Kunst, Medien und Wissenschaft", in which not only selected text passages will be read aloud, but also short films by drag king Boris Gay, among others, will be screened to activate your laughing muscles. Because queering only works as a collective and is most fun together, you can look forward to one or two hands-on activities.

Oliver Klaassen [none; they/them], co-editor and author of the QUEERULIEREN anthology, not only researches and teaches in the field of queer(ing) theories in art history at the C. v. O. University of Oldenburg and is a board member of the Gender Studies Association, but also gives anti-discrimination workshops on sexual, amorous and gender diversity and works as a writing coach and group fitness trainer. Oliver's partial perspective results from his situation as an abinary, bisexual, multiamorous, white and able-bodied person with experiences of discrimination, who comes from a working-class family far removed from the educated middle classes and is therefore affected by classism.
