Student council trip 2025: Two days in the Steyerberg life garden
Student council trip 2025: Two days in the Steyerberg life garden
From 31 May to 1 June 2025, we visited the Lebensgarten Steyerberg with a small group of nine people as part of our student council trip and camped there for one night.
The Lebensgarten sees itself as a settlement community that is driven by the desire to live in harmony with one another and with the surrounding nature. It is part of the international ecovillage movement and, in a way, a model and research project for sustainable, community-orientated living in harmony with ecological principles.
It brings together people who want to do things differently, try out new things and drive social change. The place brings together a wide range of projects - some of which we were able to get to know during our stay.
The first project we were able to explore was the permaculture park (PaLS), which Jonas - who works there as a gardener - introduced us to. The permaculture park covers an area of eight hectares, most of which was previously used for conventional maize cultivation. In order to allow a variety of plants to grow again on the sandy, depleted soil, one of the central tasks is to build up a nutrient-rich soil with the help of compost and terra preta. Vegetables are now grown on this soil for the connected SoLaWi - according to the principles of permaculture, which aims to imitate natural cycles.
This can be seen, for example, in the design of the beds: rows of trees alternate with cultivation areas, and even within the beds, different plant species grow side by side. In one of the greenhouses, we found kohlrabi, chard and beans in a wild mix - a living example of mixed cultivation. Jonas gave us exciting insights into the numerous experiments and approaches that are being trialled here.
Another project we were able to get to know is CAIA and the CAIA Academywhich Jannes introduced to us. CAIA stands for Co-existence, Awareness-based, Intrinsically-motivated Association and has now taken over the running of the seminars in the Lebensgarten. Jannes told us how they came here as a group of friends at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and how CAIA came about. Today, the Academy offers seminars, retreats and workshops designed to facilitate encounters, inspiration and personal development.
A central element of its work is the Inner Development Goals, which are designed to help people deal better with an increasingly complex environment and the challenges of our time. The seminar programme also includes the newly renovated University Guest House, which offers visitors the opportunity to stay in the community and in the midst of nature.
In addition to these two - now independent - projects, Ute also gave us an insight into the community of the Lebensgarten and the work of the associated association. Founded 40 years ago, this place brings together a variety of other initiatives and approaches. For example, the centre for non-violent communication is located here, and the KulturKüche is a space for various cultural events. There is also plenty else on offer: from morning dance circles in the village centre to tea ceremonies. Another stop on our tour was the community-run village shop, which provides residents with local shopping opportunities.
Many of the conversations also centred on challenges: structural issues, interpersonal conflicts, generational change or declining commitment - topics that also come up again and again in the work of the student representatives or in our own projects.
Overall, we can look back on two exciting days with many enriching impressions. It was a great opportunity to get to know each other while cooking together or sitting together in the evening, playing guitar and singing - across semester and degree programme boundaries.
A big thank you goes to Ute, Jonas, Jannes and everyone else at Lebensgarten who made this trip with all its special insights possible!
Excursion to Brussels - Europe at your fingertips
A delegation of 30 students from the social sciences and the Master's programme in Sustainability Economics & Management at the University of Oldenburg went on an excursion to the "capital of Europe". The aim of the excursion, which lasted several days, was to experience the content of the EU enlargement and European Green Deal from Prof Dr Martin Heidenreich's and Prof Dr Bernd Siebenhüner's seminar live in the European institutions.
A look inside the European Parliament
The starting point was the European Parliament - the centrepiece of European democracy. Among other things, we were able to marvel at the plenary chamber and seek direct dialogue with MEPs. Gaby Bischoff (Vice-President of the S&D) and Tiemo Wölken (S&D spokesperson on the Committee on the Environment) were on hand to answer questions in a relaxed atmosphere. They discussed climate protection, the shift to the right in the EU and the question of why the Parliament still moves to Strasbourg every month.
Behind the scenes of the "Capital of Europe"
Another item on the agenda was a visit to the European Commission, the "engine" of the EU. Here we discussed how political proposals are developed, the status of the Green Deal and how green policies can still be promoted in the age of the omnibus. In further meetings with NGOs from Brussels, the Emission Trading System and sustainable housing were discussed.
Visit to the Ukrainian mission
The visit to the Ukrainian mission is particularly memorable. There, the students learnt what diplomatic work looks like in times of war, what role the EU plays in reconstruction and how Ukraine is committed to a European future despite the ongoing Russian war of aggression. The visit was not only informative, but also moving - and thought-provoking.
All in all, it can be summarised as follows: The Brussels excursion is an opportunity that you should not miss!
Innovative teaching in the SEM
Teaching sustainability with games: How our Master's module "Decisions under uncertainty: Making dilemmas of sustainability tangible in a playful way" uses serious games to teach students how to deal with dilemmas of sustainability and encourages them to reflect intensively on their gaming experiences.
Environmental Disclosure in focus at Impact & Insights #3
In the third and final practical talk of this summer semester, we welcomed SEM alumna Laura Hohmann, who works in New York at CDP North America - a global, independent NGO in the field of sustainability reporting and disclosure of environmental data. Laura gave an impressive insight into the work of CDP and emphasised that the path to sustainable business is not only shaped by political guidelines, but also by bottom-up initiatives. It became clear that sustainability is a strategic issue that affects companies, investors and political decision-makers alike. With practical examples and an international perspective, Laura explained how transparency can be an effective instrument for change. A big thank you for the exciting contribution - and to all participants in Impact & Insights this summer term!
Social sustainability in focus at Impact & Insights #2
The second practical talk in the "Impact & Insights - Sustainability on the Job" format on 14 May was all about the social aspect of sustainability. SEM alumna Olga Vinnica from JANUN Oldenburg e.V. gave exciting insights into her work in youth and educational work for sustainable development. With great commitment, she showed how social change can be shaped socially - through participation, empowerment and creative projects for and with young people.
The "Impact & Insights" event series brings together practitioners and experts from the field of sustainability with SEM students. They report on their day-to-day work, share their experiences and explain the key requirements and current developments in their field of work. This summer semester will continue on 4 June with Laura Hohmann from CDP Inc. North America at 16:00 in room A05 0-056.
New format "Impact & Insights" #1 launched
The first event of the new discussion and networking format "Impact & Insights - Sustainability on the Job" kicked off on 23 April and was very well received. The first event focussed on everything to do with wind and solar energy projects. The two SEM alumni and speakers from the wpd Group, Marco Brünjes and Fabian Gruben, gave exciting insights into their daily work, highlighted current developments in the industry and did not spare any honest words on challenges and future opportunities. The event was enriched by many interested questions and the open exchange with the students - thank you very much for that!
After the successful start of the first event, the second Praxistalk will follow on 14 May. At this event, Olga Vinnica from JANUN e.V. will provide exciting insights into the social field of sustainability, especially educational and networking work with young people. We look forward to another inspiring round - and to your continued great interest!

SEMESTER WRAP-UP WS 24/25
What an eventful semester! It all started with the orientation week, where we were warmly welcomed as new students and were able to make our first contacts. We not only enjoyed a delicious meal at the running dinner, but also got to know lots of new people. The freshers' trip to Neuharlingersiel was a real highlight - with a good atmosphere, games and a great sense of community.
The running cocktail was a great way to keep things flowing before we got together to campaign for the climate strike and send a strong signal in favour of sustainability. There was no shortage of fun either: the carnival party was colourful, loud and unforgettable, and we had a great time on the traditional cabbage tour despite the wind and weather.
We can look back on a great first semester - with lots of new friendships, shared experiences and plenty of good memories!

Merger of the student body of NÖK with the SEM/WCM student body
It is with great pleasure that we welcome the students of Sustainability Economics (NÖK) to our student body! By merging NÖK with the established degree programmes Sustainability Economics and Management (SEM) and Water and Coastal Management (WCM), we are now combining the core areas of sustainable economics even more comprehensively.
NÖK and SEM/WCM complement and overlap in many ways: both degree programmes have a clear focus on the sustainable design of economic processes, be it in resource management, energy management or social justice.
This merger not only strengthens our thematic diversity, but also our cohesion as a student body. Together, we look forward to new, exciting projects and to supporting and learning from each other. A big advantage is that the NÖK means that we now include not only Master's students but also Bachelor's students, which significantly expands the student body's room for manoeuvre. The expansion of our student body through NÖK offers us all new opportunities to fulfil our tasks as student representatives even better and to effectively promote the interests of students in a future-oriented and sustainable way.

SEM students at the global climate strike in Oldenburg
Seminar "Cellular Agriculture and Cultured Meat"
In the summer semester, the seminar "Cellular Agriculture and Cultured Meat" was offered for the first time, which some SEM students took as an elective module. Together with Prof Dr Nick Lin-Hi from the University of Vechta, the students dealt intensively with the challenges of future food security. They not only learned about cellular meat production technology as a possible solution, but also about the behavioural science content that is essential for understanding and accepting such innovative approaches in society.
The final presentation took place on 15 June and was open to anyone who was interested. In groups, the students presented various positive future scenarios on topics such as the academic appointment of a farmer, the human-animal relationship, food security and land use. These narratives emphasised the advantages and potential of cellular agriculture and thus helped to promote an optimistic view of future nutrition.
Participation in the football league
Over the past few weeks, all the SEMis who wanted to have a go met up every week to play football on the university's artificial pitch. The beginning of June was the big day for 1st FC SEM: our match day in the university league was coming up. Even though it wasn't enough for us to make it through to the next round, it was a great day for our team. And because it was so much fun, the regular kick meetings will continue after the Uniliga.
Start of the 2024 summer semester
As every year, our reorientation week took place at the beginning of the summer semester. The week was packed full of varied team-building events, during which we all had a lot of fun. We started the week with an exciting pub quiz in the cosy atmosphere of the Buddelbar. This was followed on Tuesdays by a litter-picking hike, during which we cleared the area around the university and part of the Haarenniederung of rubbish. Everyone showed their sporting prowess and team spirit at the Flunkyball tournament, while the barbecue evening the next day provided the perfect opportunity to relax, chat and enjoy some delicious food. The week was a complete success and a great start to the summer term.
Panel on the tension between corporate sustainability and real talk
"Sustainability managers who want to be 'everybody's darling' are doing something wrong. You have to be 'annoying' (internally) to drive change." On 2 May, a panel on corporate sustainability took place at the University of Oldenburg, which was primarily aimed at SEM students. The event was organised by the Haufe Group in co-operation with the Chair of Ecological Economics and marked the start of the new Campus Roadshow format.
This kick-off event was organised by the sustainability managers Rieke Oetken and Fenna Papcke from EWE AG and Sandra Broschat, who is in charge of sustainability at SV Werder Bremen GmbH & Co KG aA. In a panel discussion, they reported on their day-to-day work and answered the students' questions. They discussed topics such as their own understanding of their role, the CSRD reporting obligation and the question of whether public pressure on companies is growing. "Shareholders and major customers are also asking: How sustainable are you? The pressure from the capital market is clearly noticeable," reports Fenna Papcke. The speakers also agreed that the topic of sustainability needs to be viewed holistically and driven forward more quickly: "The whole topic needs to be turned inside out, but the journey is going far too slowly," criticised Sandra Broschat, for example. Afterwards, the sustainability managers and students chatted over snacks and drinks.

SEM teachers win the teaching prize
The University of Oldenburg awarded the Teaching Prize in various categories on 30 November. Lecturers from the SEM Master's programme were honoured in two of four categories. Prof Dr Christian Busse and Satwant Dahiya received the prize in the "Best Course" category for their teaching module "Sustainable Supply Chain Management". The module is a compulsory module in the SEM degree programme. Sophie Berg and Dr Hendrik Wolter received the award in the "Research-based learning" category for their module "Research workshop: Dilemmas of Sustainability". The module can be taken as a supplementary module in the SEM degree programme. The awards emphasise the high quality of teaching in the SEM degree programme - an indispensable value in the dynamic development of sustainability research and teaching.
The award winners present themselves and their course here:
Raised beds for the inner courtyard A05
Shortly before the start of the new semester, the SEM/WCM-FSR teamed up with NABU and the FSR of Environmental Sciences to tackle the raised beds project for the A05 courtyard.
The aim was to redesign the previously very dull inner courtyard of A05 within a weekend with the help of self-built raised beds. This has not only made the courtyard more visually appealing, but also provides a home for many insects and birds thanks to the deliberate use of appropriate plants. At the same time, there are plans to equip the courtyard with benches in the future, which can then be used as a resting place for members of the university.
With this in mind, many thanks again to everyone who helped. It was a lot of fun!
Orientation week 2023 for the new SEM/WCM first-year students
As every year, an O-week was organised for the new SEM/WCM first-year students with a full programme to get to know each other. From a campus tour and a pub quiz to a city rally, a flunkyball tournament and exploring Oldenburg's nightlife, there was really nothing missing during this week. The whole thing was rounded off with a joint bike tour to Lake Woldsee.
As always, we had a great time with everyone and are looking forward to starting the first semester with lots of new friends.
Luleå, Kiruna, Abisko & Jokkmokk in seven days - excursion to northern Sweden June 2023
At the beginning of June, 10 students from the University of Oldenburg (including 9 SEMmies) and 13 students from the University of Vienna travelled to northern Sweden. The excursion took place as part of the module Nature Conservation in Practice and was accompanied by Prof Dr Ingo Mose and Norbert Weixelbaumer (Vienna).
The trip started in Luleå. In addition to an initial tour of the town of around 44,000 inhabitants, we were given an insight into the town's plans for the future by the director of the Science Park. We were also able to admire Gammelstadt Church Town (see photo with church tower and red Swedish houses). Finally, we had time to get in the mood for the upcoming national parks and longer hiking routes on a hike through the Natura 2000 area of Gammelstadsviken. On the way to Abisko, we made a stopover in Kiruna.
The mining town is particularly interesting as most of the inhabitants are currently being resettled due to further mining work and will be in the future. In Kiruna it was time to unpack our winter jackets, as even at the beginning of June it was below 10 degrees. In remote Abisko (population 131) we stayed in small Swedish cabins. We used the fact that it didn't get dark there for a first "night" hike in Abisko National Park.
The next day we went into the national park again, where the group was attacked and successfully chased away by a capercaillie. The group also learnt a lot about the Northern Lights from the Scientific Research Station in Abisko. The last stop on the excursion was Jokkmokk. There was a lot to learn about Sami culture at the Ajtee Museum. The group was also able to visit the Naturum Laponia. Further hikes in the Stora Sjöfallet and Muddus national parks were rewarded with wonderful views.
Reorientation week summer semester 2023
This summer semester, we once again organised a "reorientation week" in the second week of lectures. In addition to the SEM running group, which meets occasionally in Eversten Holz, there was a barbecue for all year groups, a pub quiz, a flunkyball tournament and the clubs' night out. What is particularly nice about the RO week is that SEM students from all semesters come together and can start the new semester together again after the lecture-free period.
Look forward to lots of fun and joint activities with us SEMis again next year!

Climate-neutral mobility in Oldenburg
Oldenburg has set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035. In this workshop, the city's previous ideas for solutions will be further developed in the form of the Mobility Plan 2030. We will focus on the following questions: What can climate-neutral mobility look like in Oldenburg? What is the current status? What course must be set today? Buy tickets here
Seed Literacy - Developing skills for diverse seeds together
Do you know what seed-resistant seeds are and what role they play in preserving biodiversity?
In this workshop you will learn that seeds as the basis of our food affects us all, even if we may not have our own garden or balcony to plant. In this workshop, we want to discuss the relevance of seed diversity for sustainable food systems and gain initial insights into theoretical and practical fields of crop conservation. We also want to look at the global dimensions of seeds. Let's grow together! Buy tickets here
Life in a donut - How can the economy respect planetary boundaries?
Imagine a sketch of a doughnut. Our planet has limits that we exceed with our way of doing business. This is the outer circle of the donut. The inner circle is the human needs that we as humanity must not fall short of. In this workshop, we will explore the question of how we can manage within these two circles.
Why do we overstep the boundaries? What do we need to change? And what is post-growth and other proposals for a sustainable economy all about?
We want to think about and discuss different proposals together. Join us (we have donuts)! Buy tickets here
Shaping the energy transition locally
Together with local initiatives (Olegeno and Oldenburger Energiecluster), you will explore the possibilities for driving forward the energy transition. We will not shy away from looking at the problems and construction sites of the further development of renewable energy structures in Oldenburg. With a sharpened eye, we will then move on to developing and, above all, exchanging ideas for solutions. Not only the people from the local projects will be there, but also representatives from the city and the trades. Buy tickets here
Day workshop - Saturday 03 June
The last word! Climate Justice in Spoken Word
Spoken word and poetry slam are more than just nice words. They are clear opinions, good ideas, strong feelings, combined with power and expression on stage. In this workshop, you can practise articulating and presenting your dreams, hopes and fears and turn them into an art to make them accessible to other people and inspire them. In the workshop, you will explore different writing techniques and genres of stage literature and produce a variety of texts that you can discuss with others and work on together. At the end of the workshop, you will have a text or idea of how you can artistically express and reinforce your ideas for a more sustainable, fairer world. Buy tickets here
We sell both combined tickets (NachDenkstatt weekend + poetry slam) as well as for both events separately.
Welcome to Oldenburg: O-Week and Freshers' Trip
As every year, the new semester started this October and the SEM degree programme was also pleased to welcome numerous new students. To make the start of the Master's programme as pleasant as possible, the Student council organised an orientation week before the start of lectures and a first-year trip to Neuharlingersiel.
The orientation week started with a welcome event, during which the students received important information about the degree programme and course, a possible semester abroad and initial offers and initiatives. The students were then picked up by their mentors. A tour of the university and various familiarisation games in the small groups enabled the first contacts to be made. In the evening, there was a sustainability quiz in the Flänzburch. To get to know the city better, a city rally was organised on Tuesday. An app took the groups to various places in the city and tasks were solved and games played at several stations. A flunkyball tournament took place on Wednesday. Former SEM students also took part in the tournament in Eversten Holz and networked with the new students. At the end of the day, we went to the Umbaubar. On Thursday, during a running dinner, the groups were able to visit each other's homes to enjoy starters, main courses and desserts. At the end of the day, a bike tour into the Oldenburg countryside was organised in sunny weather. There was a picnic at the Bornhorster See lake with a cheerful atmosphere.
After two weeks of lectures, the first student trip of the degree programme took place. The SEMis travelled by bus and train to their accommodation in Neuharlingersiel to spend the last weekend in October. Four members of the student body were already waiting there to welcome them. They cooked, ate, played and celebrated together. A Wadden Olympics was organised on Saturday. Five games were played in groups against each other, including the tangerine race/vegan egg race and tea bag toss. Once on the beach, the high tide and the sunny weather were perfect for a swim, which some of the SEMis took advantage of. Back at the accommodation, a Halloween party with a fancy dress competition was organised. On Sunday, we cleaned up together and headed home.
We warmly welcome our new SEMis and are delighted to have such great students with us again.
Student podcast on the topic of climate communication
In a course on climate communication, a group of students put together their own podcast that can compete with the really big ones. You can find the podcast on Spotify.
A podcast about communicating the climate crisis. Let's give climate communication space and understand it: Why do scientists find it so difficult to be heard? Why do we hear more about the lottery numbers and sporting events in the media, while environmental disasters and the climate are insufficiently addressed? Where is our climate policy?
Together with experts, we will discuss the challenges of climate communication and get to the bottom of these questions.
Nelly Waldeck, 25 and member of the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament, will talk about climate communication in politics. Christopher Schrader, science journalist, reveals why science is not reaching our society. Sara Schurmann, journalist and co-founder of the Climate Journalism Network, explains how the climate crisis is being made invisible. When it's once again said: "Climate change has always existed!" - after listening to this podcast, you will be able to provide Uncle Werner with direct but lovingly substantiated arguments. We want to make it clear why people don't understand. At the same time, we try to give you the communication tools you need so that you don't talk yourself into a corner in the next climate discussion.
Summer party 2023
At the end of the summer semester, the SEM/WCM summer party took place in Pinte 42 at the end of July. T-shirts and jute bags were screen-printed with our new logo, bracelets and necklaces were threaded, clothes were swapped and a round or two of flunkyball was played. There was also a large buffet with lots of delicacies brought along.
We are already looking forward to our next summer party and the afternoons together as SEMis and WCMis.
Val Venosta excursion in mid-September
In mid-September, 23 students from the University of Oldenburg (including 2 SEMis) went on an excursion to the Vinschgau Valley in northern Italy. The excursion took place as part of Prof Dr Ingo Mose's Nature Conservation in Practice module and was accompanied by Prof Dr Rainer Buchwald.
We stayed in Malles/Mals in Val Venosta/Vinschgau for the entire week of the excursion, where we were provided with delicious food every day and even had a lovely indoor pool with mountain views. From there, we set off each day to different excursion destinations.
The first day began with a short hike, during which we learnt a lot about the vegetation and biodiversity in Val Venosta/Vinschgau. On the second day, we went on a hike in the "Biosfera Val Müstair" in Switzerland and listened to a lecture by the responsible environmental officer. On the third day, we travelled to the Swiss National Park and, in combination with a short hike, received a lot of exciting input from a park employee. On the following days, in addition to a long 600 metre hike to an Italian glacier, there was an excursion to an organic apple farmer and an organic dairy farmer, where we were able to taste homemade cheese and bread in addition to a good lecture.
It was a very intensive and impressive week in which we experienced, laughed and learnt a lot as an excursion group.
2022
Welcoming the new SEM students
With the start of the winter semester 2022/23, the new students of the Master's degree programme in Sustainability Economics and Management were welcomed as the start of the orientation week. First, Dr Hendrik Wolter gave a general introduction to the degree programme, the possible course of study and the various options. He also talked about opportunities to get involved in sustainability.
Kerstin Groscurth then spoke about the possibilities of a year abroad during the SEM degree programme and various language courses at the Language Centre. Ms Groscurth spoke in particular about the Erasmus+ programme: she can only recommend a year abroad to anyone.
Furthermore, the student initiative NachDenkstatt introduced itself. This initiative advocates a practical approach to SEM studies and organises an annual conference at the University of Oldenburg lasting several days.
Finally, Rebecca Hillebrandt and Juliane Pieper represented the SEM and WCM Student councils. They also talked about the rest of the O-Week programme and clarified any unanswered questions. They also invited people to vote in the Student council elections.

Master's degree programme in Sustainability Economics and Management as a model for sustainability-oriented degree programmes
On 20 June 2022, WirtschaftsWoche magazine published the article "Greenwashing im Hörsaal?", which deals with the question of how much advertised degrees in the field of sustainable business administration often only have terms such as "sustainability", "sustainability" or "environment" in their titles or whether the compulsory modules related to sustainability actually make up the majority of the curriculum. If the latter is not the case, greenwashing at universities can be assumed. The authors Jannik Deters and Dominik Reintjes also highlight the point of view that the classic modules at the beginning of the basic Bachelor's degree programme, such as accounting, do not have to be related to sustainability at all, but that a holistic, interdisciplinary approach is important in advanced Master's programmes in order to anchor the topic of sustainability in companies and also in society. After all, there is no point in universities just giving degree programmes a "green coat of paint" and jumping on the bandwagon, but current and alternative ideas are of elementary importance for the transformation of the economy in order to establish a holistic approach.
The Master's degree programme in Sustainability Economics and Management at the University of Oldenburg receives a particularly positive mention in the article, as it allows for a flexible and interdisciplinary choice of modules, thus creating precisely those framework conditions for holistic thinking. Bernd Siebenhüner has been coordinating the Master's programme since 2006, which was launched directly after the Bologna reform. Compulsory courses in the fields of environmental or climate economics are an integral part of the curriculum and students are free to choose from a wide range of supplementary modules.
Entrepreneurial projects alongside the SEM degree programme: MYUNA
The big question hanging over the entire SEM programme is: How can we understand and ultimately solve practical sustainability problems and challenges? The programme is therefore also intended to inspire students to transfer the knowledge and problem-solving skills they have acquired into practice and apply them there. In some cases, SEM students decide to set up a company alongside their studies, such as Lea-Sophie Fass and Antonia Terriulo, who founded MYUNA UG. MYUNA is a start-up founded in Düsseldorf in 2021. Lea-Sophie is one of our SEM students and is currently in her second semester.
During their bachelor's degree, the two founders decided to counteract the further decline of retail in city centres due to the coronavirus pandemic and therefore founded MYUNA with the aim of supporting local retailers with a regionally based online platform.
Local shops are digitally mapped on this online platform. In the future, 360° images and videos will also be added. The retailers' products are collected in a shop on the platform and can be ordered there. The orders are then dispatched or can be collected directly from the shop. This gives the sellers on the platform the opportunity to reach online shoppers. MYUNA currently only operates in Düsseldorf, but would like to expand its activities to other cities in the future.
Excursion to the Kellerwald National Park
As part of the module "Nature Conservation in Practice" of the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences, students of the Master's programmes Sustainability Economics and Management, Water and Coastal Management, Landscape Ecology and Biology went on a 5-day excursion to the Kellerwald National Park region in Hesse. The Kellerwald National Park has been part of the existing UNESCO World Heritage Site "Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians" since 2007.
The programme included several guided hikes with rangers through the national park in the area of the Hochspeicher basin, the Edersee bay, the Frankenau archeregion and a visit to the barrier wall. A visit to the Geopark and the "DreiRaum" co-working space in Korbach were also integrated into the excursion days.
In beautiful, but not too hot weather, the students went out into nature every day and topics such as national park management, challenges of sustainability education, flora and fauna were discussed together. Identifying plants and butterflies, as well as searching for fire salamander larvae in the water, were a great activity.
There are also other excursions as part of the module, including to Scotland and the Black Forest. The aim is to provide students with knowledge about central approaches and instruments of nature conservation in Germany and Europe, in particular the implementation of large-scale protected areas, projects and measures of maintenance and management. The integration of these approaches into nature conservation and regional development strategies (via agriculture, tourism, etc.) in co-operation with protected area administrations and other relevant actors is also important.

First edition of the Sustainability Practice Forum in summer semester 2022
With the start of the 2022 summer semester, the Sustainability Practice Forum is once again an integral part of the events at the Chair of Ecological Economics. The practical forum offers SEM students in particular the opportunity to gain insights into potential professional fields in various areas related to sustainability. As part of the event, practitioners and experts from politics, research, business and society are invited each semester to report on their own academic appointments as well as requirements and challenges in the context of sustainability.
SEM alumnus Fabian Gruben, who works as a project manager at German Windtechnik AG, a service company for onshore and offshore wind turbines, was a guest at the first edition of the practical forum on 5 May. In addition to the company's development in an international context and its economic potential in the field of renewable energies, Fabian reported in detail on his work as a project manager and gave a detailed insight into his workplace and the projects he manages. He also pointed out potential career fields for students in his company and rounded off the event with a personal conclusion.
We are delighted to welcome Christina Ludwig (Sustainability Consultant) and Dr Heinrich Tschochohei (Managing Director and Chief Sustainability Officer) from BTC Business Technology Consulting AG as guests at the next Sustainability Practice Forum on 16 June.
If you have any questions or suggestions about the practical forum, please contact us at the following email address:

Course excursion to Hamburg
At the end of the 2021/22 winter semester, some of the students on the "Environmental and Sustainability Governance" module accepted Joachim "Jo" Müller's invitation and travelled to Hamburg by train for a day trip. Jo Müller, who led the course with Professor Dr Bernd Siebenhüner, regularly invites students to his home city. This time, too, he had thought up a day programme for the students, which started with a relaxed pizza lunch in Ottensen. There was time for extensive conversations and discussions. The good mood was only dampened by the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine. After the best pizza in Hamburg (according to Jo Müller), the group made their way to the Elbe in perfect weather. On the boat trip across the river, the students were able to see the impressive ships and tugboats of Hamburg's transshipment harbour. Jo Müller explained the different neighbourhoods of Hamburg along the Elbe and told the story of the pirate Störtebeker. After the boat tour, we went to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Meanwhile, the good weather had taken its leave, so the outdoor terraces of the landmark unfortunately remained closed, much to the regret of Jo Müller, who already had to cut the day's programme short due to the change in weather and lack of time. However, the students would like to emphasise that they particularly enjoyed the exchange with Jo Müller and that it was a very nice day in Hamburg despite the shortened programme!
We would also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Jo Müller, who organised the day trip and made time for us!

SEM and EcoEc alumni meeting 2021
The annual alumni reunion for graduates of the Sustainability Economics and Management degree programme took place on 16 and 17 April 2021, organised by the Alumni Steering Committee. A total of around 70 alumni took part. Despite the meeting being moved online, the evening was characterised by warm reunions and exciting encounters. The supporting programme provided suitable entertainment: a degree programme quiz and several surveys opened the meeting. The evening also began with news from the teaching programme. Friday evening ended after informal discussions and games between scattered alumni, which lasted well into the night. Saturday continued with news from the SEM degree programme. This was followed by practical presentations by alumni who talked about their current jobs and careers. Finally, there was a last coffee together before everyone said goodbye until next time.
Amendment of the examination regulations
The amendment to the SEM examination regulations was published in the Official Notices of the University of Oldenburg on 6 August 2021 and is valid from the new academic year 2021/2022. The changes relate to the programme structure, the course content and the specialisations offered. All corresponding information pages on www.uol.de/sem have been adapted accordingly.
If you have any questions about the changes, please contact the Student Advisory Service.
Next edition of the "Sustainability Practice Forum" on 24 June 2021 at 18:00
Dear students,
As part of our survey on the "Sustainability Practice Forum", many of you requested a speaker from the fashion industry.
We are therefore delighted to invite you to the next edition of the practical forum with Katharina Liefner!
Ms Liefner works in the Corporate Responsibility department at ARMEDANGELSa fashion label founded in Cologne in 2007 that specialises in the design, production and distribution of responsible fashion.
The company specialises in timeless design, sustainable & regenerative materials and fair production instead of fast fashion, cheap mass-produced goods and wage slavery.
Before joining ARMEDANGELS, Ms Liefner studied Business Administration at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences in Jena and Sustainability Management at the University of Wuppertal.
A great opportunity to ask all your questions about fair fashion and corporate responsibility in a relaxed atmosphere!
The event will take place next Thursday (24 June) at 18:00.
As usual, we will meet again online via BigBlueButton-Meeting.
So please register for the Stud.IP event to take part in the practice forum, or use this link to go directly to the meeting.
We look forward to seeing you and to many exciting questions for our guest!
Doughnuts for Future: A Bremen doughnut for the 21st century
Student research project on the topic of "Future" in the SEM degree programme
Based on economist Kate Raworth's theory "Doughnut Economics - Seven ways to think like a 21st-Century Economist", two students on the "Sustainability Economics and Management" degree programme are researching the status quo of social and environmental sustainability in the city of Bremen. Lenz Schulte Westenberg and Mareike Willems want to map where in the city the planetary boundaries are exceeded and social standards are undercut. Within these social and ecological guidelines, an intermediate space is created in which the economy can and should flourish (the so-called doughnut). The resulting city portrait lays the foundation for possible stakeholder workshops to develop a vision for a sustainable city of Bremen that combines social and ecological aspects.
The presentation of the results is expected to take place in November 2021.
The project is funded by the University of Oldenburg as part of the "Forschendes Lernen" programme. Further information on the funding programme can be found here.
Parallel to the research project, a Bremen city initiative is being set up to further develop the doughnut principle according to Raworth. Interested parties can find out more about events and opportunities for participation here.
