The UniChor is a general university choir. It operates on a termly basis, with rehearsals taking place only during the lecture term. As an ensemble course, the choir forms part of the Music subject’s programme of study. However, all members of the UOL can register for the choir via StudIP. The choir is open to anyone interested, with no entry requirements, including students from all disciplines and non-students.

The choir is conducted by Silja Stegemeier, an artistic staff member at the Institute of Music specialising in vocal training.

The choir’s repertoire is a colourful mix of shorter works from different eras, cultures and genres. Variety is central to the concept, so hopefully everyone will find something they particularly enjoy or be able to explore new musical worlds. Basic vocal technique training forms an integral part of the choir rehearsals. The aim of each term is to stage small concerts at which the repertoire worked on is presented.

Participation is free of charge. The ability to read music is helpful but not a strict requirement. Similarly, whilst we welcome previous experience of choral singing, it is also possible to rediscover the joy of singing together here. No audition is required for admission. The choir’s membership changes each semester, so it makes sense to join at the start of the semester. Participation in the choir should then (after 1–2 taster rehearsals) be a commitment for one semester, so that a concert programme can be prepared with a consistent group.

Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays from 6.15 pm to 7.45 pm in the auditorium, Building A11.
