Confident in the Moment – Improvisation for Study and Work
10.00 – 11.30 am
Workshop
Students and staff
Face-to-face
Description:
Whether in a presentation, a seminar, a meeting or a job interview: time and again we find ourselves in situations that cannot be planned and in which we have to do the right thing on the spot. Improvisation can be practised – and that is precisely what this workshop for students and staff is all about.
In improvisational theatre, spontaneity is key – a skill that translates perfectly to both academic life and everyday working life. Through games and role-play exercises, participants discover their creative potential and hone precisely the skills that are in demand in the workplace: spontaneity, confidence in front of groups and communication skills. The principle of ‘embracing mistakes’ takes the pressure off and encourages participants to try new things. Improvisational theatre is fast-paced, witty and great fun. After all, courage means ‘taking action and doing things’.

Remote but not lonely – strengthening our bonds
1.00 pm – 2.00 pm
Lecture
Students and staff
Online
Description:
Working from home – whether as a student or in a professional role – offers many advantages, such as greater flexibility or no need to commute. But it also has its downsides and can heighten the feeling of being less connected to others in everyday life. In this session, participants will learn how loneliness can arise when working from home, what effects it can have on wellbeing, motivation and collaboration, and what strategies can help to actively counteract it and stay socially connected. As well as expert insights, the focus is primarily on practical tips: for fostering greater connection with one another, creating mindful social moments in everyday life, and exploring new ideas on how genuine closeness, a sense of belonging and meaningful contact can be established and maintained both within and beyond the digital world.

Between the feed and focus. Using social media mindfully
2.00 pm – 3.00 pm
Lecture
Students and staff
Online
Description:
Social media is always with us: in bed in the morning, on the go, during study breaks and on the sofa in the evening. It connects us with others, entertains us and keeps us informed. At the same time, it can capture our attention, encourage comparisons and make it harder to relax.
This interactive talk explores why the news feed is so compelling, when its use can become a burden, and how to engage with social media in a mindful and healthy way without having to give it up altogether.
Contents
– What does social media do to our brains? (Likes, dopamine, concentration problems)
– How does social media affect our health? (Community, FOMO, ...)
– When does a habit become a problem?
– When the feed changes our perspective (algorithms, echo chambers, fake news)
– Using social media mindfully (dealing with comparisons, trends and ideals; digital balance)

Singing together with the University Choir
6.15 pm – 7.45 pm
Workshop
Students and staff
In-person
Description:
Studies show that singing is good for our health in various ways: it can relieve stress, improve breathing, strengthen the cardiovascular system and even boost the immune system. When we sing together in groups, this can also strengthen our sense of connection with others.
The UniChor has been active at the University of Oldenburg for over 30 years: “The choir’s programme is a colourful mix of shorter works from different eras, cultures and genres. Variety is part of the concept, so that all participants can find something to their taste or explore new musical worlds.” (https://uol.de/unichor) Around 60 people meet every Tuesday during term time at 6.15 pm in the auditorium of the A11 building. Anyone can join in – even without any prior experience – and it’s entirely up to you how confidently you handle your own ‘instrument’: Experimentation is allowed and encouraged! Participation is free of charge.
On this evening, the UniChor is opening its doors to us, and anyone interested is welcome to drop by, have a go and sing along.
It would be helpful if you could register in advance, but those who decide to come at the last minute are also very welcome.

I am more than just my to-do list: building self-esteem whilst at university
2.00 pm – 3.30 pm
Workshop
Students
Online
Description:
University life is often all about performance, written exams, expectations and comparing ourselves with others. Amidst written exams, deadlines and questions about the future, we can quickly lose sight of what defines us and makes us valuable, regardless of grades, achievements and productivity.
In this workshop, we’ll take time to consciously build our self-worth. You’ll have the opportunity to reflect on your personal strengths, values, motivations and aspirations, and to explore which sources of self-worth can provide you with support and strength, even during challenging periods of your studies.
Together, we’ll explore the following questions, amongst others:
• What defines me – beyond my achievements and academic results?
• How can I treat myself with more kindness and support?
• How do I deal with uncertainty, self-doubt, the tendency to compare myself with others, and ‘bad days’?
• How can we show mutual appreciation and support one another in our day-to-day student lives?
The workshop is resource-oriented, practical and interactive. It provides space for self-reflection, discussion and practical ideas for a healthy, appreciative approach to ourselves and one another. After all, a strengthened sense of self-worth can be an important foundation for feeling positively connected to oneself and others, overcoming challenges and navigating one’s academic journey with greater ease.

Health through connection – Why community is good for us
3.30 pm – 4.15 pm
Lecture
Students and staff
Online
Description:
Loneliness is an underestimated social phenomenon with far-reaching consequences for mental and physical health. The lecture explores loneliness as a subjective experience and demonstrates why it is not the number, but the quality of social relationships that is crucial. Drawing on the latest epidemiological data, the lecture will outline the prevalence of loneliness, at-risk groups and critical life stages – as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also explain why humans are neurobiologically particularly sensitive to social isolation and how loneliness affects health and life expectancy. Finally, effective prevention and intervention strategies from the fields of medicine, psychotherapy, society and politics will be presented. The lecture makes it clear that loneliness is not a personal failure, but a shared societal challenge.

Shaping hybrid teaching: enabling participation, strengthening connections, reflecting on boundaries
12.30 – 1.30 pm
Workshop
Staff (teachers)
Online
Description:
Hybrid teaching and learning formats offer a wide range of opportunities to make courses more inclusive and accessible. They can enable students with different life circumstances and needs – such as chronic or mental health conditions, limited mobility or care responsibilities – to participate.
However, implementing hybrid teaching presents lecturers with organisational, technical and, in particular, pedagogical challenges: How can both on-campus and online participants be equally engaged? Which methods promote interaction and a sense of belonging? And what are the limitations of hybrid teaching formats?
The workshop will present the technical requirements as well as examples of the pedagogical design of hybrid teaching formats. Together, we will discuss the possibilities and limitations of participation that fosters learning, and develop approaches to ensure that hybrid teaching can succeed under the real-world conditions of everyday university life.

Do you remember the summer hit of 2026? Didn’t we all sing along to ‘You’re good enough / I don’t know what the world tells you / Just be yourself’ – but how do we actually put that into practice in everyday life? This workshop explores that very question. It’s about dealing with self-doubt and taking a positive view of your own skills.
We’ll be discussing topics such as the inner critic and establishing contact with our own strengths.
And by the end, hopefully we’ll be able to say: “You’re not alooone”

Get connected – Stay connected throughout your studies
4.00 pm – 5.30 pm
Lecture
Students
Online
Description:
A packed lecture theatre and people all around you on the campus – yet studying can sometimes feel lonely. Some students are new to the city and are still looking to make friends. Others have plenty of contacts but miss having people they can really talk to. Still others spend a lot of time with friends from back home, whilst realising that something is missing here.
Loneliness isn’t always visible. It can also affect people who appear active, confident and well-connected to the outside world. This interactive talk offers an open and realistic approach to the topic.
- Why we can feel lonely even when surrounded by people
- How does an encounter turn into a friendship?
- Where and how can I make connections at the University of Oldenburg? (Points of contact, conversation starters)
- Keeping existing relationships alive
- Being alone as a source of strength (withdrawal, social needs)
- Voluntary networking group
