Excursions

Our conference will begin on Wednesday, 29 August 2018 with a preliminary programme. Three excursions to three networks of extracurricular learning centres are planned from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm.

During the excursions, you will learn about the diversity and vitality of extracurricular places of learning in the Oldenburg and Northwest Lower Saxony region and the endeavours of the places of learning to network.

A coach is available for each excursion, the number of participants per excursion is limited, but we are sure that every participant will be able to take part in one of the excursions. Each excursion starts at 2.00 pm at the lecture hall centre and ends at approx. 6.00 pm at the location in Oldenburg city centre where we have reserved tables for the "Icebreaker".

If you are interested, please register for one of the following excursions.

E 1 Excursion 1: How learning centres on the North Sea network

Together with the University of Oldenburg, seven learning centres in Wilhelmshaven and the surrounding area have developed a concept for their networking and filled it with life. The concept envisages that the places of learning perceive their very different perspectives on topics such as climate, life on the coast or regional development as complementary and present this to holidaymakers, laypeople and school classes. An aquarium, a marine museum, a regional environmental centre, a national park house, a school laboratory, a Botanical Garden and a museum are all involved in the networking project. When learning centres of different types complement each other in terms of content, skills or objectives, we call this complementary networking. It enables visitors to be sensitised to diverse perspectives, complex social conflicts, but also to the region's opportunities. During the excursion, you will familiarise yourself with the network using three of the learning locations as examples. You will learn which strategies and tools are used to open up the added value of the network to visitors. And we will discuss the benefits and challenges of complementary networking. The excursion ends at the Jade Bay at 53°30'46" N, 8°08'22" E and draining water.

Organisers: Christin Marie Sajons, Prof. Dr Michael Komorek

E 2 Excursion 2: Moor: botanical, cultural and live

Participating institutions of the Oldenburg network "Children and Natural Sciences" present the moor and more from different perspectives. In the Botanical Garden, the focus is on the plants. Bog bodies are one of the highlights of the State Museum of Nature and Man. And the "NAWI House" takes you into the remaining moorland of the Wüschemeer.

Since 2008, representatives from over 14 different educational institutions and initiatives from Oldenburg and the surrounding area have been meeting in the open "Children and Science Network".

They have set themselves the task of supporting professionals in day-care centres and primary schools with a diverse, coordinated range of activities for exploring and teaching scientific phenomena. This is based on the idea that children have a natural interest in discovery and can be inspired by science and technology from an early age.

Organisers: Simona Selle, Annika Roskam

E 3 Excursion 3: Extracurricular learning on the farm - regional and national networking

Learning on a farm is a prominent example of extracurricular, interdisciplinary learning. Here, the original encounter harbours the potential to initiate geographical, ecological, economic and scientific-technical learning in an action-oriented way. Over the past 15 years, this area of education has developed enormously in terms of quality and quantity. In Lower Saxony alone, more than 4,000 events are organised annually with school classes, nursery groups and other target groups as part of the "Creating transparency - from the shop counter to the producer" project. The basis for successful educational work in this sector is a well-developed, differentiated network.

The excursion leads to the farm association in Wardenburg-Littel, which specialises in dairy cattle, biogas and chicken fattening. The farm association is regularly active as an extracurricular learning centre. In co-operation with the regional education provider Kreislandvolkverband Oldenburg e. V., educational programmes are offered for school groups and kindergartens.

In three small groups, you will explore agricultural production on site, get to know the farm as an extracurricular place of learning and gain insights into the diverse networking structures in the area of "learning on the farm" regionally and nationwide.

Organisers: Dr Gabriele Diersen, Annegret Jansen
