You've probably heard this before: people should live in harmony with nature, preserve it and not destroy it. But how can we do that? This question also occupies researchers at the university. To find answers, they take a close look at so-called UNESCO biosphere reserves. These are very special areas, such as the Wadden Sea, the Rhön or the Spreewald. They are to be specially protected, but also studied and further developed - so that we humans can learn how it really works: living in harmony with nature.
There are 16 biosphere reserves in Germany and around 600 around the world - quite a few "model regions" where we can learn: How do we protect endangered plants and animals, such as the dunlin? How can we preserve rare breeds of domestic animals such as the Rhön sheep? Or grow regional foods such as the Spreewald cucumber? By the way: You can already answer the question in the headline for yourself - and you'll find out a lot more in the lecture.
