Clever animals

Prof Dr Georg Klump
Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences When animals come into the world, they cannot know everything from the start. Animals also have to learn a lot to get by in life. When we observe animals, we quickly realise that they can learn certain things very well and are quite clever. Some animals hide their food so that they have something to eat later and can memorise lots of hiding places. Others make tools to make it easier to get to their food. Just as we learn to speak, many birds learn to sing. They can even learn words from our language. Grey parrots even manage to say short sentences and answer simple questions. We will show these and other examples of animal learning in the lecture. The same applies to animals as it does to us humans: Those who are clever are successful.
