Project outline
Contested conditions of access. The production of local migration regimes in Hamburg and West Berlin (working title)
The doctoral project compares the negotiation of local migration regimes in Hamburg and West Berlin between the beginning of transnational labour migration to the Federal Republic and the fundamental change in asylum law in 1993. The analysis includes knowledge and actions of institutional actors such as city governments, district administrations and welfare associations as well as migrant workers and refugees. In particular, it will examine how the categorisation of migrants has changed over the decades and what implications this has had.
