The training series "Computing Science Education in Grades 3 to 6"

A training series for primary and lower secondary school teachers

Contents and goals

In an increasingly digitalised world, a basic understanding of the technologies that shape our environment is becoming ever more important. This training course offers insights into various areas of Computing Science as well as activity-orientated methods for the practical teaching of Computing Science education from Year 3 onwards in subject lessons, which are also intended for use in the classroom:

1. how is data transmitted digitally?
- From blinking to binary coding
- Encryption and other secret languages

2. what are the components of a computer system and how do they work together?
- Structure and function of computers and digital devices (EVA principle)

3. how does the computer find the information on the Internet when I call up a website?
- Structure of the Internet and how data transmission works

4. who tells the robot where to go and how does this work?
- Algorithms as instructions for computer systems
- Programming and controlling robots and microcontrollers

The aim of the training series is to offer primary school teachers in the subject of general studies and in lower secondary schools insights into various areas of Computing Science and to present them with concrete and tried-and-tested materials for teaching the basics of computer science and to try them out together. As part of the training series, participants will develop, implement and reflect on their own lessons.

As part of the D4MINT joint project funded by the BMBF Kompetenzverbund lernen:digital, we would also like to promote an active exchange between specialised didactics and teachers in practice in order to continuously develop the training concepts and adapt them to your needs.

No prior knowledge of Computing Science is required to participate in this training programme.

Please note: Participating teachers are requested to bring a laptop for the practical phases of the training.

Procedure and dates

The training series consists of four dates and a practical phase.
