Power cable
Power cable
Prof Dr Volker Mellert (Institute of Physics)
Switch on the light! The lamp is on. Are we happy with that? Or do we also need to know that electrons race through the power cable and mysteriously light up the fluorescent tube? Isn't it enough to use a mobile phone? Or do we also need to know something about electromagnetic radiation?
If we are curious about how things in our environment actually work and don't want to simply accept that they do as expected, then we need physics in everyday life. If we want to know why the loudspeaker chirps when the mobile phone is transmitting, or why talking on the phone can be harmful to the head, then we need to understand our technical environment a little. Perhaps we also want to change it, improve it, make our lives easier and more beautiful. Physics can help with this.
