Banks don't bake bread rolls - but what do they actually do?

Prof Dr Jörg Prokop
Department of Economics and Law

Banks are something very special. They are important for our economy. But what exactly do banks do? One thing is certain: they don't bake bread rolls, produce cars or even grow sugar beet. You can't get a haircut in a bank, and a bank employee doesn't drive a tram. And yet banks are somehow connected to all these activities.

Why is this the case and why are banks so important for the economic cycle? And what happens if banks suddenly run out of money? Is that even possible and why are many people afraid of it? The lecture will answer all these questions - and also discuss the financial crisis that has been the subject of so much talk recently.
