The extinction of fish fingers

The extinction of fish fingers

Prof Dr Helmut Hillebrand
Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment

Fish fingers can be found in almost every freezer. But how do they actually get there? What we don't think about when we eat them: The fish has travelled a long way. It comes from the North Sea, the African coast and Alaska. In the past, cod was often used for fish fingers. But cod fishing has almost collapsed worldwide and had to be discontinued in many regions.

The lecture will show you how this happened and what it means for the habitat and for marine protected areas when a species like cod largely disappears. Fishing is extremely important for our diet, but how do we avoid overfishing the oceans? And how can we ensure that there will still be fish fingers in our freezers in the future?
