The dissertation on "Didactic structuring of genetics lessons at lower secondary level - empirical investigations in the classroom as a contribution to didactic reconstruction" (working title) offers me the opportunity to combine my interest in biochemical topics with biology didactic issues and experience from my own teaching activities. Based on Vera Frerichs' work on the didactic reconstruction ofstructures and processes of heredity, the subject of the dissertation includes the development of a didactic concept and a corresponding teaching sequence on genetics at lower secondary school level, the practical testing of the teaching unit with subsequent evaluation and revision.

The connection between molecular genetics and classical genetics (Mendelian genetics) is one of the key aspects of modern genetics teaching. Of central importance is the physiological-biochemical relationship between genes and traits, which is inadequately captured by the metaphor of genetic information. For the development of the teaching unit, genetics should be linked with aspects of physiology - namely the development of characteristics. The teaching of the development of characteristics is exemplified by the development of blood group antigens on erythrocytes.
