The didactics of biology in Oldenburg has a notable tradition thanks to the work of Professors Dr August Kelle and Dr Dieter Eschenhagen.
The sand beetle is a reference to Dieter Eschenhagen, who wrote his doctoral thesis on Cicindela in 1968. The beetle also adorns the cover of the book we published on Dieter Eschenhagen's 65th birthday [Kattmann, U. (ed.) (1994). Biology didactics in practice. Cologne/Oldenburg: Aulis/diz].
Closely associated with the working group were:
Dr Hans Georg Hilfrich was a member of the group for many years and habilitated in biology didactics in Oldenburg. He was later director of an educational centre in Aachen.
Dr Karl Otto Meyer, former director of the State Museum of Natural History in Oldenburg, was an honorary professor at the University of Oldenburg, teaching biology didactics and zoology (museum education).
From 1991 to 2004, the working group was led by Dr Ulrich Kattmann headed the working group. The working group had the following members:
