Projekt: Epiphyten und Wind in einer sich ändernden Welt

Epiphyten sind ein Schlüsselelement tropischer Wälder, die als eine Wiege der Biodiversität gelten. Die Gruppe selbst ist extrem divers und dient als Habitatbildner für viele weitere Organismen, als Nahrungsquelle und spielt eine zentrale Rolle im Wasser- und Nährstoffzyklus des Ökosystems. Strukturell abhängig von ihrem Wirtsbaum und an der Schnittstelle zwischen terrestrischer Vegetation und Atmosphäre wachsend, sind sie eng mit der Atmosphäre verbunden und klimatischen Veränderungen besonders ausgesetzt. Daher ist es erstaunlich, wie wenig über den Einfluss von Wind auf Epiphyten bekannt ist. Das Projekt verbindet Biodiversitätsforschung und Physik mit dem Ziel, den Einfluss von Wind auf die für Epiphyten essentielle Verankerung am Wirtsbaum zu verstehen. Dies ist auch vor dem Hintergrund immer wichtiger, dass ihr natürlicher Lebensraum, durch Landnutzungsänderung stetig fragmentiert wird und dies potentiell negative Effekte von Klimawandel, wie z.B. die Intensivierung starker Sturmereignisse, potenziert.
